Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) said concerning the Hajj of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his sermon at Arafah that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fear Allah regarding women, for you have made their private parts lawful for yourselves by the covenant of Allah and through marriage. Your right over them is that they do not let anyone whom you dislike tread on your bedding. If they do that, then strike them with a beating that leaves no mark. And their right over you is that you provide their food and clothing in a reasonable manner."

Sayyiduna Iyas bin Abdullah bin Abi Dhubab (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not beat the female servants of Allah." He said: The women became emboldened and behaved badly towards their husbands. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! The women have become emboldened and their conduct towards their husbands has worsened since you forbade beating them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then beat them." The narrator said: So the people beat their wives that night. The narrator said: Many women came complaining of the beating. When morning came, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Seventy women came to the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), all of them complaining of beating. By Allah! You will not find those men to be the best of you."
It has reached us from Muhammad bin Isma'il al-Bukhari that he said: Iyas is not known to have been a Companion. It has also been narrated through another chain as mursal.

Sayyidah Umm Kulthum bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Men were forbidden from beating women, then they complained about the women to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) allowed them to beat them. Then I said: Tonight seventy women came to the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) who had been beaten. Yahya said: I think it was al-Qasim. The narrator said: Then afterwards they were told: "The best of you will never beat (their wives)."

Sayyidah Umm Ayman (may Allah be pleased with her) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) advised the members of his household: "Do not associate anything with Allah, even if you are tortured or burned; obey your parents, even if they order you to leave everything; do not deliberately abandon the obligatory prayer, for whoever deliberately abandons the obligatory prayer, the protection of Allah is withdrawn from him; beware of wine, for it is the root of all evils; beware of disobedience, for it is the displeasure of Allah; do not try to seize authority from those who hold it, even if you think it is rightfully yours; do not flee from battle, even if death strikes the people. If you are among them, stand firm; spend on your household from your wealth; do not lift your stick from them; and make them fear Allah, the Lord of Might." Al-Kisa'i and others said that the stick does not mean the one used for beating; rather, what is intended is teaching them discipline.
There is a break in the chain (irsal) between Makhul and Umm Ayman.
