أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ فُورَكٍ أنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، نا يُونُسُ بْنُ حَبِيبٍ، نا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، نا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْمُسْلِيِّ، عَنِ الْأَشْعَثِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ قَالَ: ضِفْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ فَقَالَ لِي: يَا أَشْعَثُ احْفَظْ عَنِّي ثَلَاثًا حَفِظْتُهُنَّ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " لَا تَسْأَلِ الرَّجُلَ فِيمَ ضَرَبَ امْرَأَتَهُ، وَلَا تَنَامَنَّ إِلَّا عَلَى وِتْرٍ " وَنَسِيتُ الثَّالِثَةَ وَقَالَ غَيْرُهُ عَنْ أَبِي دَاوُدَ فِي هَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْمُسْلِيِّ.
Sayyiduna Ash'ath bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I was a guest of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said to me: O Ash'ath! Memorize three things from me which I memorized from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Do not ask a man why he struck his wife," and "Do not sleep without having prayed witr." The narrator says: I forgot the third thing.
