Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, when some matter comes before him, let him speak good or remain silent. Accept the counsel to treat women well, for woman was created from a rib, and the most crooked of the ribs is the uppermost. If you try to straighten it, you will break it, and if you leave it, it will remain crooked forever."

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates, regarding the Hajj of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his (peace and blessings be upon him) sermon at Arafah, that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fear Allah concerning women, for you have taken them as a trust from Allah, and you have made their private parts lawful through marriage. Your right over them is that they never let anyone whom you dislike onto your beds. If they do so, then strike them with a blow that leaves no visible mark. And their right over you is that you feed them and clothe them in a good manner."

The narrator says: He gestured with both his hands and said: I had sworn this many times and that many times that I would not believe in you (peace and blessings be upon him) nor follow you (peace and blessings be upon him), but the drought kept frightening me and terror kept being placed in my heart until I came to stand before you (peace and blessings be upon him). By Allah, has Allah sent you (peace and blessings be upon him), and is what you (peace and blessings be upon him) say the command of Allah? He said: "Yes." He said: Is what you command us something Allah has given you? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes." He said: What do you say about our wives? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They are your tilth, so come to your tilth however you wish; feed them from what you eat, clothe them from what you wear, and do not beat them or revile them." He said: When we are together, may we look at one another's private parts? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." He said: And when we are apart? He says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) placed one of his thighs over the other and said: "Allah is more deserving that you be modest before Him." He says: And I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "On the Day of Resurrection, people will be gathered with their mouths sealed, and the first parts of a person to speak will be his palm and his thigh."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I like to adorn myself for my wife just as I like her to adorn herself for me, because Allah, the Lord of Might, says: "And they (women) have rights similar to those (of men) over them, in a reasonable manner."
