Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A Bedouin said: What about the camels that are healthy like gazelles, and then a camel with mange mixes with them and makes them mangy too? It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Disease is not contagious." Then a Bedouin stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! What do you say about healthy camels that are like gazelles, then a mangy camel comes among them and they all become mangy? He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Then who gave the disease to the first one?"

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The sick should not be brought near the healthy." Then al-Harith bin Abi Dhubab al-Dawsi said to him: But you yourself used to narrate from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that disease is not contagious. Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) denied it. Al-Harith bin Abi Dhubab said: Indeed you did! You yourself used to narrate it from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The dispute between Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) and al-Harith grew heated, so Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) became angry and spoke in the Abyssinian language, then said to al-Harith bin Abi Dhubab: Do you know what I said? Al-Harith said: No. Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: I refuse, meaning that I did not narrate it the way you say. Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Then Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) held firm to what he used to narrate to us from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "The sick should not be brought to the healthy," and he abandoned the saying "Disease is not contagious" which he used to narrate from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Abu Salamah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I do not know whether Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) forgot that word, that is, "Disease is not contagious," or what his situation was; yet I never knew him to forget any word after he had once narrated it to us from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), except his denial of the saying "Disease is not contagious."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No disease is contagious, and it is not permissible to bring the sick to the healthy, so that the healthy may stay wherever he wishes." It was said: O Messenger of Allah! What is the reason for this? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is a harm."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Disease is not contagious, no owl is an evil omen, the month of Safar is not an evil omen, and the sick should not be brought to the healthy, so that the healthy may stay wherever he wishes." It was said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Why is that? He said: "It is a harm."
This is gharib (unusual) with this chain, if al-Raqashi preserved it accurately; and Allah knows best.

Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed this, that is, the plague, is a sickness or a punishment that was inflicted on nations before you. After that it remained on the earth; one goes away and another comes. Whoever hears of it in a land should not go to it, and whoever is in a region where this disease breaks out should not flee from it."
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب النكاح / 14241
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that he was with Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) when he set out for Syria. The people were returning from Sargh, and he was also met by his commanders who were appointed over the armies, Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah and his companions as well, (who informed him) that disease had broken out in Syria. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered that the first Muhajirun be gathered, so I gathered them all. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) consulted them, and they differed about it. Some said: One should not go to the place of the epidemic; turn back. Others said: Now you are going there for a purpose, you should not turn back; this is the decree of Allah. He (may Allah be pleased with him) consulted them, then gave them an order and they left. Then he said: Call the Ansar. I called them and he sought their counsel, and they too differed like the Muhajirun; some said one thing and some said another. He (may Allah be pleased with him) gave them an order as well, and they also left. Then he said: If there are any elders of the Muhajirun who emigrated at the time of the Conquest, call them. I called them, and they were of one opinion: turn back. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had it announced among the people that they should stay on their mounts, and they stayed on their mounts. He said: Keep watching what I do, and do whatever I command. There Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reached the morning, then mounted, then said to the people: I am going back. Then Abu Ubaydah said, and he disliked opposing him: Are you fleeing from the decree of Allah? Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) became angry and said: If only someone other than you had said this, O Abu Ubaydah! I am fleeing from the decree of Allah to another decree of Allah. If there were two valleys, one stricken with drought and the other green and fertile, if he left his animals to graze in the dry valley, that too would be by the decree of Allah, and if he left his animals in the green and fertile valley, that too would be by the decree of Allah.
He said: Then he went aside privately with Abu Ubaydah and the two discussed the matter for a while. Then Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived; he had been absent because of some need of his. He came while the people were differing, and he said: I have knowledge about this. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: What is it? He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When you hear of an epidemic in a land, do not go there, and when an epidemic breaks out in a land while you are in it, do not leave it fleeing." So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) praised Allah, returned himself and ordered the people to return as well.
(b) Abdullah bin Umar and Abdullah bin Amir bin Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with them both) both said that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) returned from the place called Sargh only because of the hadith of Abd al-Rahman bin Awf.

He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you have camels?" He said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What are their colours?" He said: Red. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Is there an ash-coloured one among them?" He said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why is that?" He said: Perhaps some strain (of ancestry) drew it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Perhaps some strain drew him too."

Allah intended to test them, so He sent an angel to them. He came to the man with vitiligo and said: What thing do you like most? He said: A good colour and good skin, for people find me repulsive. So the angel passed his hand over his body, the disease went away, and he was given good skin and a good colour." Then he mentioned the long hadith.
