Ahmad bin Salamah said: I heard Muslim bin al-Hajjaj (may Allah have mercy on him) say: The people of Yemen know the hadith of Ma'mar better than others, for he narrated this hadith from al-Zuhri, from Salim, from his father in Basra, and only the people of Basra narrated it from him. If a trustworthy narrator other than the people of Basra narrates it, the hadith becomes a (connected) hadith; otherwise, the mursal version is more fitting.
Al-Shaykh (al-Bayhaqi) (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We have narrated it from narrators other than the people of Basra, from Ma'mar, connected in the same way, and Allah Almighty knows best. It has also been narrated through another route from Nafi' and Salim, from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both).
