Humaydah bin al-Shamardal said that when al-Harith bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam, he had eight wives. Ibn Abi Layla said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded him to choose four. Al-Kalbi said: Al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, I and my eight wives have accepted Islam, and they also emigrated with me." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Choose four of them." He said: To the one I was to keep I would say: 'Come forward,' and to the one I was to leave I would say: 'Go back.' He said: They were adjuring me by our kinship and by our children.
