Abu Bakr bin Hafs said that whenever Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) was invited to a marriage, he would say: Let not all the people come to us. 'Al-hamdu lillah' (All praise is for Allah) and 'Wa al-salatu wa al-salamu 'ala Muhammad' (Blessings and peace be upon Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)). So-and-so has proposed to you for marriage to so-and-so; if you marry her to him, then 'Al-hamdu lillah' (All praise is for Allah), and if you turn him back, that is, do not marry her to him, then 'Subhan Allah' (Glory be to Allah).
