Abu Bakr bin Abi al-Jahm al-Adawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I heard Fatimah bint Qays (may Allah be pleased with her) saying that her husband divorced her three times, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not assign her maintenance or residence. She said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you become lawful (for marriage), inform me." I informed him (peace and blessings be upon him), and Abu Jahm (may Allah be pleased with him), Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them both) proposed marriage to me. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Mu'awiyah is a man who has no wealth, and Abu Jahm beats women a great deal; but Usamah." She gestured with her hand like this (and said): Usamah, Usamah! The narrator said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Obedience to Allah and His Messenger is better for you." She said: I married him, and I came to be envied.
(b) Fatimah bint Qays (may Allah be pleased with her) was a Qurashi woman from Banu Fihr, and Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them both) was a freed slave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Sayyidah Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Several Companions proposed marriage to me, so I sent my sister to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to consult him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "(What about) one who would teach her the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of the Messenger?" She said: Who is he? He said: "Zayd bin Harithah." She became angry and said: Will you marry your uncle's daughter to your freed slave? Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her) said: My sister told me, and I said something even harsher than she had and became even angrier, so Allah revealed this verse: "And it is not fitting for any believing man or believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should have a choice in their own affair." [Surah al-Ahzab: 36] She said: I said: Marry me to whomever you wish. She said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) married me to him. I was sharp-tongued with him, so he complained about me to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Keep your wife and fear Allah." Then I was sharp-tongued with him again, so he complained about me to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I will divorce her. He gave me an irrevocable divorce. When my waiting period ended, I was not even aware until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came in while my hair was uncovered. I said: This is a matter from heaven. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Without a proposal and without a witness? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah is the one who gives in marriage, and Jibril is the witness."
(b) Although its chain is such that no proof is established by the like of it, it is well known that Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her), who was from Banu Asad bin Khuzaymah, and whose mother Umaymah (may Allah be pleased with her) was the paternal aunt of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), was married to Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him). When he divorced her, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) married her. In the hadith the words are "ibnata 'ammik" (your paternal uncle's daughter), but the correct words are "ibnata 'ammatik" (your paternal aunt's daughter).

Amr bin Maymun (may Allah have mercy on him) said: My father narrated to me that Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) had a brother who used to trace his lineage to the Arabs and considered himself one of them. He proposed marriage to an Arab woman. They said: If Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) comes, we will marry you (to her). Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) came and said: I am Bilal bin Rabah, and this is my brother, who is bad in religion and character. If you wish, marry him and give her to him in marriage; and if you wish to leave him, then leave him. They said: Whoever you are the brother of, we will marry him (to our woman). So they married him.
