Allah Almighty says: "And We did not teach him poetry, nor is it befitting for him." [Surah Ya-Sin: 69]
And He said: "So believe in Allah and His Messenger, the unlettered Prophet." [Surah al-A'raf: 158]
Some of the scholars of tafsir said: "The unlettered one is he who neither reads a book nor writes with his right hand."
The Shaykh (Imam al-Bayhaqi) (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "This is the view of Muqatil bin Sulayman and other scholars of tafsir."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said, concerning the saying of Allah Almighty: "And you did not recite before it any scripture, nor did you write it with your right hand." [Surah al-Ankabut: 48]: He (peace and blessings be upon him) neither read nor wrote.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We are an unlettered people; we neither write nor do we know calculation. The month is like this, like this and like this," and (the third time) he (peace and blessings be upon him) folded one finger (meaning twenty-nine days), "and it is like this, like this and like this," meaning thirty days.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to perform Umrah, he sent word to the people of Makkah seeking their permission to enter Makkah. They stipulated to him that he would not stay there more than three nights, that he would enter only with weapons in their sheaths, and that he would not invite any of them (to go with him). Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) was writing the terms: This is what Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), the Messenger of Allah, has agreed to. They said: If we knew that you (peace and blessings be upon him) were the Messenger of Allah, we would not have prevented you, and we would have pledged allegiance to you; write: Muhammad bin Abdullah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am Muhammad bin Abdullah, and by Allah, I am also Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah." The narrator said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) did not know how to write. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "Erase 'Messenger of Allah'." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will never erase it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Show it to me." So he showed it to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) erased it with his own hand.
When they had entered Makkah and the term had expired, they came to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: Tell your companion to leave. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Certainly, we will leave."

Likewise; it contains only this addition, that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ali! Erase 'Messenger of Allah'." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I will never erase it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself took the document, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) could not write well.

Awn bin Abdullah narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not die until he had written and read, that is, until he had learned.
This hadith is munqati' (its chain is broken), and among its narrators are a number of weak and unknown narrators. And Allah Almighty knows best.

Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) never composed a single line of poetry except one line: "Take a good omen in what you desire and it will be; for seldom is it said of a thing 'it has happened' except that it comes true." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: He did not say 'tahaqquqa', so as not to give it its (metrical) ending and so make it poetry.
The Shaykh (Imam al-Bayhaqi) (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I have recorded it only with this chain, and among its narrators is one whose condition is unknown. As for rajaz, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite it.

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Once, on a cold morning, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out to the Muhajirun and the Ansar, who were digging the trench. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, the true good is the good of the Hereafter, so forgive the Ansar and the Muhajirun." They replied: "We are those who have pledged to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) that we will keep striving in jihad as long as we live."

Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of the Trench; he (peace and blessings be upon him) was moving earth, and the dust was covering the hair of his (peace and blessings be upon him) chest, for he (peace and blessings be upon him) had a great deal of hair on his chest, and he was reciting the rajaz verses of Abdullah bin Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him): 'Allahumma lawla anta mahtadayna
wa la tasaddaqna wa la sallayna
fa-anzilan sakinatan 'alayna
wa thabbitil-aqdama in laqayna
innal-a'da'a qad baghaw 'alayna
wa in aradu fitnatan abayna' "O Allah, were it not for You we would not have been guided, nor would we have given charity or prayed.
So send down tranquillity upon us, and make our feet firm when we meet (the enemy).
The enemies have transgressed against us; if they seek to cause tribulation, we refuse."
He would recite them in a loud voice. [Sahih. Bukhari: 2873. Muslim: 1083]

"What are you but a finger that has bled? And what you have met has been in the path of Allah."
