وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو نَصْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الطَّابَرَانِيُّ بِهَا، ثنا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مَنْصُورٍ الطُّوسِيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الصَّائِغُ، ثنا رَوْحُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ، ثنا شُعْبَةُ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ الْأَسْوَدَ بْنَ قَيْسٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ سَعِيدٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " إِنَّا أُمَّةٌ أُمِّيَّةٌ لَا نَكْتُبُ وَلَا نَحْسُبُ، وَالشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا، وَهَكَذَا وَقَبَضَ إِصْبَعَهُ وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا، يَعْنِي ثَلَاثِينَ " أَخْرَجَاهُ فِي الصَّحِيحِ مِنْ حَدِيثِ شُعْبَةَ.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We are an unlettered people; we neither write nor do we know calculation. The month is like this, like this and like this," and (the third time) he (peace and blessings be upon him) folded one finger (meaning twenty-nine days), "and it is like this, like this and like this," meaning thirty days.
