It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Every child is born upon the fitrah (natural disposition); then his parents make him a Jew or make him a Christian, just as a camel gives birth to a sound young one. Have you ever seen one with its ear cut off?" They said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! What do you say about one who dies while still young?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty knows best what they would have done."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Every child of the children of Adam is born upon the fitrah (natural disposition) until his parents make him a Jew, a Christian or a Magian, just as an animal gives birth to a sound, whole young one. Do you find any with its ear cut off?" Then Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If you wish, recite (this verse): "(Adhere to) the fitrah of Allah upon which He created mankind. There is no altering the creation of Allah. That is the upright religion, but most people do not know" [Surah al-Rum: 30].

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Aswad bin Sari' (may Allah be pleased with him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Every child is born upon the fitrah (natural disposition) until he expresses himself. His parents make him a Jew or a Christian."
The old position of Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) is that the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), "Every child is born upon the fitrah upon which Allah Almighty created the creation," means that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) held that, as long as they have not expressed themselves in speech and chosen one of the two positions, faith or disbelief, they have no ruling of their own; their ruling follows that of their fathers. So whatever their fathers were on the day they were born, that is their state: if a believer, then he is upon his faith, and if a disbeliever, then upon his disbelief.

Hajjaj bin Minhal (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I heard Hammad bin Salamah (may Allah have mercy on him) explaining the hadith "Every child is born upon the fitrah (natural disposition)." He said: In our view this refers to when Allah Almighty took the covenant from them in the loins of their fathers, when Allah Almighty said: "Am I not your Lord? They said: Yes" [Surah al-A'raf: 172].
