It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) expelled the Jews from the Hijaz. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) conquered Khaybar, he too intended to remove the Jews from there, and at that time the land of Khaybar belonged to Allah, His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and all the Muslims. When he intended to remove the Jews, they requested that they be allowed to stay there and work the land, in return for which they would receive half of the fruit. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We will let you stay on that condition for as long as we wish." So they stayed there until Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), during his rule, expelled them to Tayma' and Ariha.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when Khaybar was conquered, the Jews requested the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to let them stay there on the condition that they would work the land of Khaybar and receive half of the fruit and grain it produced. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We let you stay on that condition, but only for as long as we wish." They remained on that condition during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and for part of the time of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Half of Khaybar was divided into various shares, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to take the khums (one-fifth) from it.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fought the people of Khaybar until he confined them to their fortress and took control of the land and the orchards. They said: "O Muhammad, let us stay here; we will look after these orchards." Neither the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) nor the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) had servants who could stay there. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave them Khaybar on the condition that they would give half of the fruit, grain or whatever else there was. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him) would go to them every year, make the khars (estimate), and then hold them liable for half. One year they complained to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about the severity of the estimate of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him), and they wanted to bribe him. He (Abdullah bin Rawahah) said: "O enemies of Allah! Would you feed me what is unlawful? I have come to you from the person most beloved to me, and you are more hateful to me than your number in apes and swine; yet my hatred of you and my love for him will not lead me to be unjust to you." Then they said: "By this justice the heavens and the earth stand."

It is reported from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) settled an arrangement with the Jews of Khaybar concerning Khaybar for half (of the produce), fixed their shares, and stipulated to them: "Whenever we wish, we will expel you."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) conquered Khaybar, he stipulated to them that the land and everything yellow and white, meaning gold and silver, would be his. The people of Khaybar said to him: "We know the land better, so give it to us; we will work it, and half of the fruit will be ours and half yours." He gave them the land of Khaybar on that condition. When it was time for the date palms to be harvested, he sent Ibn Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him) to them, and he estimated the date palms, which the people of Madinah call al-khars. Ibn Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "In this there is such and such." They said: "O Ibn Rawahah, you have overestimated." Ibn Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Then I will take the date palms and give you half of what I said." They said: "This is the truth by which the heavens and the earth stand; we are content to take it at what you have said."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) conquered Khaybar, he called the Jews and said: "We will give you half of the fruit on the condition that you work it. I let you stay as Allah has let you stay." Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to send Ibn Rawahah, who would make the estimate and then give them the choice to keep it or leave it. The Jews came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and complained. He (peace and blessings be upon him) called Ibn Rawahah and told him what they had said. Abdullah said: "O Messenger of Allah, they have the choice in this: if they wish, they take it; and if they leave it, we will keep it." So the Jews were satisfied and said: "By this the heavens and the earth stand." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said during the illness in which he passed away: "Two religions cannot coexist in the Arabian Peninsula." When this reached Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he sent word to the Jews of Khaybar: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) engaged you to work these properties and stipulated that he would let you stay," meaning for as long as Allah would let you stay, "and Allah had indeed permitted your expulsion in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) expelled them; he removed every Jew and Christian from the land of the Hijaz. Then he divided it among the people of Hudaybiyah.
