It is narrated from Sayyiduna Urwah al-Bariqi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him a dinar so that he could buy a sacrificial goat. He bought two goats with the one dinar, then sold one of them for a dinar, and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with a goat and a dinar. He (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed for blessing for him. After that, even if he bought dust, he would make a profit on it.

These are two hadiths: Shabib bin Gharqadah heard one of them from Urwah al-Bariqi, but did not hear the other; he only heard the tribe reporting it to him from Urwah.

Shabib bin Gharqadah said: I heard the tribe narrating from Sayyiduna Urwah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him a dinar to buy a sheep for him with it. He bought two sheep for him with it, sold one of them for a dinar, and brought him a dinar and a sheep. So he prayed for blessing for him in his trade, and he was such that if he had bought dust, he would have made a profit on it.
Sufyan said: Al-Hasan bin Umarah brought us this hadith from him, saying that Shabib heard it from Urwah. So I went to him, and Shabib said: "I did not hear it from Urwah; I heard the tribe reporting it from him. But I did hear him say: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Good is tied to the forelocks of horses until the Day of Resurrection.'" He said: And I saw seventy horses in his house. Sufyan said: He was to buy a sheep for him, as if it were a sacrifice.

Urwah bin Abi al-Ja'd al-Bariqi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me a dinar and said: "Buy a sheep for us with it." He said: I went and bought two sheep for one dinar. A man met me on the way and bargained with me for a sheep, so I sold it to him for a dinar. I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "This is your dinar and this is your sheep." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "How did you do that?" He told him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated: 'Allahumma barik lahu fi safqati yaminihi' (O Allah, bless him in the dealings of his right hand). Urwah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I would stand in the Kunasah (market yard) of Kufah, and I would not return home until I had made a profit of forty thousand.

It is narrated from Riyah bin Ubaydah (may Allah have mercy on him) that a man sent ten dinars with a man from the people of Basrah to a man in Madinah. The man with whom it was sent bought a camel with it, then sold it for eleven dinars. He asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he said: "The eleven dinars belong to the owner of the money, and had anything happened to the camel, he would have been liable for it."
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) held that the one who buys with goods belonging to someone else is liable, and he held that the profit belongs to the owner of the goods, and he did not give the profit to the one who was liable. Al-Rabi' said: The final view of Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) is that if he transgresses and buys something with that very money and makes a profit on it, the purchase is void; but if he buys for an unspecified sum and then pays with that money, the purchase is his, the profit is his and the loss is upon him, and he is liable for the money. Al-Muzani reported the same, and then said: He argued that the hadith of al-Bariqi is not established in his view. The Shaykh said: That is because of the irsal (break) in its chain: Shabib bin Gharqadah did not hear it from Urwah al-Bariqi; he only heard it from the tribe reporting it from him; and the hadith of Hakim bin Hizam is likewise from a shaykh of the people of Madinah, from him. Al-Muzani interpreted the hadith of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) with his two sons as meaning that he asked them, out of the filial duty they owed him, to give all of its profit to the Muslims; they did not accept, and when he asked for half, they accepted willingly.
