(a) Sulayman al-Shadhakuni narrates from Hisham bin Yusuf. (b) Ibrahim bin Mu'awiyah narrates from Hisham bin Yusuf that Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed a restriction on Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) from dealing with his property, and sold his property to pay off his debt.

Abd al-Rahman bin Ka'b bin Malik narrates from his father (Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) was the most honoured and gentle young man of his people. He would not keep anything with himself, so he was always in debt, until all his property went into debt. He came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke to them (his creditors). If they had forgiven anyone a debt for someone's sake, they would have forgiven Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) for the sake of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) sold the property of Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), and nothing remained with Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him).

Imam al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Ibn Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) was a handsome and gentle young man, and among the best sons of his people. Whatever he was asked for, he would give, until so much debt fell upon him that all his property went into debt. He requested the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to speak to his creditors. He (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke to them, but they did not forgive anything. If a debt were forgiven anyone for someone's sake, Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) would have been forgiven for the sake of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) kept selling his property and distributing it among the creditors, so that nothing was left with Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him).

Isma'il bin Raja' narrates from Abu Mijlaz (may Allah have mercy on him) that two young men of the Juhaynah tribe jointly owned a slave. One of them freed his share, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) detained him until he sold his goats for it. This is mursal.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Two men of Juhaynah jointly owned a slave. One of them freed him, and (the matter) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he made the one who freed him liable (for his partner's share). He had nearly two hundred goats; he (peace and blessings be upon him) sold them and gave (the price) to the other man.
Al-Hasan bin Umarah is da'if (weak). Al-Thawri narrated it from Ibn Abi Layla, from al-Qasim bin Abd al-Rahman, from Abu Mijlaz as mursal, and that is more likely correct.

Umar bin Abd al-Rahman bin Dilaf narrates from his father that a man of the Juhaynah tribe used to buy riding camels at high prices and then travel swiftly, so that he would get ahead of the pilgrims. Then he became bankrupt, and his case was brought before Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: To proceed! O people! Al-Usayfi', the Usayfi' of Juhaynah, was content, as regards his religion and his trustworthiness, that it be said of him: He got ahead of the pilgrims. But he took on debt heedlessly, and so he has become overwhelmed by debt. Whoever has a debt owed by him, let him come to us tomorrow morning, and we will divide his property among his creditors. And beware of debt, for its beginning is worry and its end is strife.

Ayyub (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I have been informed that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) gave a similar judgement, and he said: "We will divide his property among the creditors in shares."
