Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the state of ihram for Hajj, and women and children were with us. When we came to Makkah, we circumambulated the House of Allah and performed the sa'i between Safa and Marwah, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us: "That seven of us should share in the sacrifice of a camel and of a cow."

Marwan bin al-Hakam and al-Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with them both) say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out intending to visit the House of Allah, with no intention of fighting, and he had 70 sacrificial camels with him, on behalf of seven hundred men, each camel being on behalf of ten.

Marwan bin al-Hakam and al-Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with them both) both say that in the year of Hudaybiyah the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out from Madinah with more than a thousand of his Companions. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Dhul-Hulayfah, he garlanded the sacrificial animals and marked them, and from there he entered ihram for Umrah.
(b) According to the established reports, the number of his (peace and blessings be upon him) Companions at Hudaybiyah was more than a thousand; then they differed: (some said) their number was 1500, according to some it was 1400, and according to some 1300.

Qatadah (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I asked Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) how many people were at the Pledge of Ridwan. He said: There were fifteen hundred. I said: Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) says fourteen hundred. He said: May Allah have mercy on him, he was mistaken; he himself told me that they were fifteen hundred.

Salim bin Abi al-Ja'd says: We said to Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both): How many of you were there on the occasion of Hudaybiyah? He said: There were fifteen hundred.

Amr heard Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) say: We were 1400 at Hudaybiyah, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to us: "You are the best of the people of the earth." (Jabir said:) If I could see today, I would show you the place of the tree. [Sahih: Bukhari 3923]

Amr heard Ibn Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him), the Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who had been present at the Pledge of Ridwan, say: We were 1300 that day, and (the tribe of) Aslam that day were one-eighth of the Muhajirun.
(b) This Amr is Ibn Murrah, and the more likely (to be correct) is the narration of Amr bin Dinar from Jabir. Likewise Ma'qil bin Yasar, Salamah bin al-Akwa' and al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with them) narrated it, and all of them were present at Hudaybiyah, except that in one narration from al-Bara' (it says) that they were 1400 or more on the day of Hudaybiyah; it is as though they were in doubt about the excess, or (the doubt came from) some of the narrators from al-Bara'. And Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) made clear, in the narration of Abu al-Zubayr from him, that they slaughtered a camel on behalf of seven and a cow on behalf of seven; so it is as though they slaughtered the seventy (camels) on behalf of some of them and slaughtered cows on behalf of the rest, one for every seven.

Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): "We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey, and the day of sacrifice came, so ten men shared in the sacrifice of a camel, and seven in the sacrifice of a cow."
(b) It has been narrated thus with this chain, but the hadith of Abu al-Zubayr from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) is more authentic than it; he was present at Hudaybiyah and was present at Hajj and Umrah, and he informed us that "the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered them to have seven men share in a camel," so it is more worthy of acceptance.
(c) It has been narrated from Sufyan al-Thawri from Abu al-Zubayr from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him): "We slaughtered seventy camels on the day of Hudaybiyah, a camel on behalf of ten," but I consider it nothing but an error, for al-Firyabi narrated it from al-Thawri and said: a camel on behalf of seven. Likewise Malik bin Anas, Ibn Jurayj, Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah and others narrated it from Abu al-Zubayr from Jabir, saying: a camel on behalf of seven; Ata bin Abi Rabah also said the same from Jabir, and Muslim bin al-Hajjaj preferred their narration by recording it rather than the narration of others.
(d) As for the hadith of al-Zuhri from Urwah, Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasar is alone in mentioning in it a camel on behalf of ten, and the hadith of Ikrimah is narrated only by al-Husayn bin Waqid from Ilba' bin Ahmar. The hadith of Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) is more authentic than all of these; he reported their sharing (in sacrificial animals) during Hajj, Umrah and at Hudaybiyah by the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so it is more worthy of acceptance.
