Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: "And (remember) when We made the House a place of repeated return for mankind and a place of security." [Surah al-Baqarah: 125] (to the end of the verse).
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) says: In the speech of the Arabs, the word al-mathabah means a place to which people return again and again, coming back to it after leaving it; and it is also said: thaba ilayhi, meaning they gathered at it.

It is reported from Abu al-Hajjaj Mujahid bin Jabr (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding the saying of Allah Almighty: "And when We made the House a place of return (or a place of reward) for mankind and a place of security" [Surah al-Baqarah: 125]. He said: They return to it, they go and come back, and they never fulfil their longing for it.

Ibn Abi Najih narrates from Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) that "a place of return for mankind" [Surah al-Baqarah: 125] means that they never fulfil their longing for it, and "security" means that whoever enters the city of Makkah does not fear.

Sa'id bin Jubayr narrates from Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning the saying of Allah Almighty: "And proclaim the Hajj among the people" [Surah al-Hajj: 27], that when Allah Almighty commanded Ibrahim (peace be upon him) to proclaim the Hajj among the people, he said: "O people! Your Lord has taken a House and He commands you to perform Hajj to it." Every stone, tree, hillock, soil and everything that heard his voice or call responded to it. They said: 'Labbayk Allahumma labbayk' (Here we are, O Allah, here we are).

Ibn Abi Zabyan narrates from his father that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: When Ibrahim (peace be upon him) finished building the House, he said: "O my Lord! I have finished." Allah, the Lord of Might, said: "Proclaim the Hajj among the people." He said: "O my Lord! My voice will not reach." Allah Almighty said: "You proclaim, and I will make it reach." He said: "O my Lord! What shall I say?" Allah Almighty said: "Say: O people! Allah has made the Hajj of the House obligatory upon you." Those who dwell between the heavens and the earth heard his voice. Do you not see that people come from the farthest ends of the earth reciting the talbiyah?

Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) says: We were with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), and the people mentioned the Dajjal and said that between his eyes will be written (K F R). Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I did not hear this from him (peace and blessings be upon him) in this way; rather he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "As for Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him), look at your companion. As for Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him), he is a brown-complexioned man with curly hair, upon a red camel whose nose-rein is a strong rope made of palm fibre. It is as if I am looking at him as he descends from the valley, reciting the talbiyah."

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In the time of Adam (peace be upon him), the site of the House was a handspan or more, as a mark and sign. The angels used to perform Hajj to it before Adam (peace be upon him). Then Adam (peace be upon him) performed Hajj to it, and the angels came to meet Adam (peace be upon him) and asked: O Adam! Where have you come from? He said: I have performed Hajj to the House. They said: The angels performed Hajj to it before you."

Muhammad bin Ka'b al-Qurazi (may Allah have mercy on him), or someone else, relates that Adam (peace be upon him) performed Hajj to the House. The angels met him and said: Your Hajj has been accepted, O Adam (peace be upon him); and we performed Hajj to it two thousand years before you.

Miqsam narrates from Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): "Seventy prophets (peace be upon them) passed through the pass of al-Rawha' on their way to Hajj, wearing garments of wool, and seventy prophets (peace be upon them) prayed in Masjid al-Khayf."
(b) Urwah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that every prophet performed Hajj to the House except Hud and Salih (peace be upon them both). Nuh (peace be upon him) too performed Hajj to the House before the Flood of Nuh came upon the earth; then when the flood came upon the earth, the House was also damaged, and the House was on a red mound. Allah, the Lord of Might, sent Sayyiduna Hud (peace be upon him), and he remained occupied with the affairs of his people until Allah Almighty took his soul, but he was unable to perform Hajj. Then when Allah Almighty granted the site to Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him), he performed Hajj, and then every prophet performed Hajj to it.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that Musa bin Imran (peace be upon him) performed Hajj among fifty thousand men of the Children of Israel, wearing two Qatawani cloaks, and he was reciting the talbiyah: 'Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayk ta'abbudan wa riqqan, labbayk ana 'abduka ana ladayka ladayka ya kashshaf al-kurab' (Here I am, O Allah, here I am; here I am in worship and servitude; here I am, I am Your servant, I am before You, before You, O Remover of distresses). And the mountains answered him.
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It has not been related to us about any prophet or any of the past nations that anyone ever came to the House except in the state of ihram, and whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered Makkah he entered in the state of ihram, except on the occasion of the Conquest of Makkah.
