Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as a marfu' report: "Your day of Eid al-Fitr is the day on which you break the fast, and your day of Eid al-Adha is the day on which you sacrifice. The whole plain of Arafah is a place of standing, the whole plain of Muzdalifah is also a place of standing, the whole of Mina is a place of sacrifice, and all the roads of Makkah are places of sacrifice."

Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Day of Arafah is when the imam stands at Arafah, the day of Eid al-Adha is the day the imam sacrifices, and Eid al-Fitr is the day the imam breaks the fast."
This Muhammad is known as al-Farisi; he was a Kufan and the judge of Fars, and he alone narrated it from Sufyan.

Ibn Jurayj (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I said to Ata (may Allah have mercy on him): A man performed Hajj for the first time, and the people made a mistake about the Day of Sacrifice (yawm al-nahr); will it be valid for him? He said: Yes, by my life! It will be valid for him. He said: I think he said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your day of Eid al-Fitr is the day on which you break the fast, and your day of Eid al-Adha is when you sacrifice." And I think he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And the Day of Arafah is when the people stand."
