Urwah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: We mention this; if it did not benefit them, why would people send their women ahead? And if it were as he says, there would have been more than six thousand menstruating women at Mina, all of whom had performed the ifadah.

He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Aqra halqa (literally: barren, shaven-headed! in the idiom of Quraysh), "you are going to hold us back." Then he said: "Did you not perform the ifadah on the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Nahr)?" (meaning the tawaf). She said: Yes! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then depart."

When women performed Hajj with Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), she would fear that they might begin menstruating, so she would send them ahead on the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Nahr) itself and they would perform the tawaf al-ifadah. If they began menstruating after that, she would not wait for them to become pure, but would depart with them while they were menstruating.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: A concession has been granted to the menstruating woman to go back once she has performed the ifadah. Abu Amr (may Allah have mercy on him) added in his narration that he (Tawus) said: At first I heard Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) say that she may not go back; then I heard him say: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) granted them a concession."

Tawus (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I was with Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) when Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Do you give the fatwa that a menstruating woman may go back before performing the farewell tawaf?" He said: "Yes!" He said: "Do not give this fatwa." Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Then go and ask, for my sake, such-and-such Ansari woman whether the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered her to do that." He came back laughing and said: "You have spoken the truth."

Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The people of Madinah asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about a woman who performed tawaf of the House on the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Nahr) and then began menstruating. He said: "She may leave." They said: "We will not accept your view; here is Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) giving a fatwa contrary to yours." He said: "When you go to Madinah, ask there." When they went to Madinah, they asked, and they were told about Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her). Among those whom they asked was Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her), and she too told them the matter of Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her).
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الحج / 9761
Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "She should stay until she becomes pure, and her last act should be at the House (of Allah)." Then Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "If she has already performed the circumambulation (tawaf) on the Day of Sacrifice, then she may depart." So Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a message to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): "I have found what you said to be just as you said." Then Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I know the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) concerning women, but I wanted to speak according to the Book of Allah." Then he recited this verse: "Then let them end their untidiness, fulfil their vows and circumambulate the Ancient House" [Surah al-Hajj: 29]. "She has removed her untidiness, fulfilled her vow and circumambulated the House, so what remains?"

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When (a woman) has performed the circumambulation on the Day of Sacrifice and then her menstruation begins, she may return (home). And Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said that she should not return until she becomes pure and circumambulates the House (of Allah). Then after that he sent a message to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), and he narrated a hadith like the previous one.

Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) differed about this. Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Her last act should be the circumambulation of the House (of Allah)." And Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "When she has performed the Ifadah (circumambulation) on the Day of Sacrifice and then her menstruation begins, she may depart if she wishes." The Ansar said: "We will not follow you, since Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) differs with you." So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Go and ask Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her)." So they asked her, and she said that Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Huyayy bin Akhtab (may Allah be pleased with her) began menstruating on the Day of Sacrifice after she had circumambulated the House (of Allah), so Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to her: "Disappointment be upon you! You are holding us back." They mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered her to depart. And Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The same thing happened to me, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me to depart as well.
