Sa'id said: Al-Hajjaj came to visit Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) while he was ill, and I was also present there. He asked: How are you feeling? He said: I am well. He asked: Who wounded your leg? He said: The one who ordered the carrying of weapons on a day on which carrying them is not permissible, meaning al-Hajjaj. He said: If we come to know who he is, we will punish him. What had actually happened was that the people departed on the night of departure (al-Nafr), and one of al-Hajjaj's guards, who was standing holding out his spear, struck the upper side of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar's (may Allah be pleased with them both) foot, and he remained afflicted with that injury until he passed away.

Sa'id bin Jubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I was with Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) when the point of a spear struck the sole of his foot, and the sole of his foot became stuck to the stirrup, so he dismounted and pulled it out. This happened at Mina. When this news reached al-Hajjaj, he came to visit him and said: If only we knew who struck you! Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: It is you who struck me. He said: How? He said: You carried weapons on a day on which they were not carried, and you brought weapons into the Haram, whereas weapons were not brought into the Haram. [Sahih. Bukhari 923]
