Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was in the state of ihram. He mounted a she-camel and it became stubborn: it would put one foot forward and pull the other back. So he said: "It is as if her rider were a twig upon a fan when she sways off with him, or a drowsy drinker." Then he said: 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that once he was travelling with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) on the road to Makkah during his caliphate, and the Muhajirun and the Ansar were also with them. He recited a line of poetry in a melodious voice, and a man from Iraq said (there was no other Iraqi with them at that time): O Commander of the Believers! Let someone other than you say it. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) felt shy about that, and he urged his mount on until it was separated from the caravan.

Sayyiduna Khawwat bin Jubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We set out with Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) to perform Hajj, and we travelled in a caravan in which were Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah and Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with them both). The people said: O Khawwat! Sing something for us. So he sang for them, and they said: Sing to us from the poetry of Dirar. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Leave Abu Abdullah to sing from the offspring of his own heart, meaning his own poetry. So I kept singing to them until, when the pre-dawn time came, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Hold back your tongue, O Khawwat, for we have reached the pre-dawn time. Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Come over to a man who, I hope, is no worse than Umar. He says: So Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) and I moved aside, and we continued like that until we prayed Fajr.
