Marwan bin al-Hakam said: I found Sayyiduna Ali and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them both) in Makkah, and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) used to forbid combining Hajj and Umrah, and also Hajj al-Tamattu'. When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) learned of this, he made the talbiyah for Hajj al-Qiran and said: 'Labbayka bi-'umratin wa hajjatin ma'an' (Here I am, for Umrah and Hajj together). Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Do you know that I forbid the people from something and then you do that very thing? Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will not abandon the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for the sake of anyone's word.

Sayyiduna Subayy bin Ma'bad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I had newly come into Islam from Jahiliyyah and Christianity, so I strove and made the talbiyah for Hajj and Umrah, and I set out making that talbiyah. I passed by Zayd bin Suhan and Salman bin Rabi'ah (may Allah have mercy on them both) at a place called al-Udhayb, and one of them said: This man is even more astray than his household's camel. The other said: Both of them together? I went away from there, and their words stung me greatly, until I came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and mentioned what they had said. He said: Their words carry no weight; you have been guided to the Sunnah of your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
