Abu Atiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him) and I entered upon Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). They said: O Mother of the Believers! There are two men among the Companions of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him): one of them prays early and also breaks his fast early, and the other delays the prayer and the breaking of the fast. She asked: "Which one hastens?" They said: Abdullah. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "This is how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do." And the other was Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him).

Abu Atiyyah al-Wadi'i said: Masruq and I went to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). We said: "O Mother of the Believers! There are two men among the Companions of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him): one of them hastens the breaking of the fast but delays the suhur, while the other delays the breaking of the fast and hastens the suhur." She said: "Who is the one who hastens the breaking of the fast and delays the suhur?" We said: "He is Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him)." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We, the community of Prophets, have been commanded to hasten our breaking of the fast, to delay our suhur, and to place our right hands over our left in the prayer."
This hadith is known through Talhah bin Amr al-Makki, and he is da'if (weak); and there is disagreement in what is narrated from him. It has also been narrated through other weak routes from Abu Hurayrah and Ibn Umar. It is also reported from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) as her own statement, in which it says that three things are part of prophethood, and then she mentioned them; and this is the most authentic of what has been reported on this.

Humayd bin Abd al-Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Umar and Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to perform the Maghrib prayer when they saw that the night had become dark. Then they would break their fast after the prayer, and this was in Ramadan.
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said in al-Mabsut that they did this seeing latitude in delaying it, not that their aim was to abandon the virtue that was permitted to them; and they would become non-fasting even without eating or drinking, because the fast does not remain valid at night.
