Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by him while he was at al-Hudaybiyah, before entering Makkah, in the state of ihram, lighting a fire under his cooking pot, with lice falling onto his face. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Are these vermin of yours troubling you?" I said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then shave your head and feed six poor people a faraq (basket) of dates, and a faraq is three sa's; or fast three days, or offer a sacrifice." Ibn Abi Najih said: "or slaughter a sheep."

Abu Dawud al-Sijistani (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I heard Ahmad bin Hanbal (may Allah have mercy on him) say: "The faraq is sixteen ratls," and I heard him say: "The sa' of Ibn Abi Dhi'b is five and a third ratls." He was asked: What about the one who said eight ratls? He said: That is not preserved.

Abu Ahmad Muhammad bin Abd al-Wahhab (may Allah have mercy on him) relates: I heard my father say: Imam Abu Yusuf (may Allah have mercy on him) asked Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him), in the presence of the Commander of the Faithful, how many ratls the sa' is. He replied: The Sunnah with us is that the sa' is not measured in ratls; and with this answer he silenced him. Abu Ahmad says: I heard Husayn bin al-Walid say that Imam Abu Yusuf (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When I came to Madinah, I gathered the sons of the Companions of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and had all their sa's brought; each of them related from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that this is that sa'. I found all their sa's to be equal. So I abandoned the view of Imam Abu Hanifah (may Allah have mercy on him) and turned to this.

Husayn bin al-Walid (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Abu Yusuf (may Allah have mercy on him) came to us on his return from Hajj and said: I want to open for you a door of knowledge that concerned me. I investigated it: I came to Madinah and asked about the sa', and they said: This sa' of ours is the sa' of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I said to them: What is your proof? They said: We will bring you its proof tomorrow. The next morning about fifty shaykhs came to me, sons of the Muhajirun and the Ansar, each of them with a sa' under his cloak, and each of them was reporting from his father or his household that this is the sa' of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When I looked, I found them all equal, and it was five and a third ratls, slightly less. So I considered it strong, abandoned the view of Abu Hanifah (may Allah have mercy on him), and accepted the view of the people of Madinah.
Husayn (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I performed Hajj that same year and met Imam Malik bin Anas (may Allah have mercy on him). I asked him about the sa', and he said: This sa' of ours is indeed the sa' of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I asked: How many ratls is it? He said: A measure of volume is not reckoned in ratls. Husayn (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Then I met Abdullah bin Zayd bin Aslam (may Allah have mercy on him), and he said: My father told me from my grandfather that this is the sa' of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the people said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah, our sa' is the smallest of all sa's and our mudd is the smallest of all mudds. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, bless us in our sa' and our mudd, in our little and our much, and grant us two blessings along with the blessing. O Allah, Ibrahim, Your servant and Your intimate friend, prayed to You for the people of Makkah, and I, Your servant and Your Messenger, pray to You for the people of Madinah with the like of what Ibrahim prayed for the people of Makkah."
As for what Salih bin Musa al-Talhi narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the bath for major ritual impurity (janabah) was a sa' (of water), and for ablution two ratls, and that the sa' is eight ratls: Salih is alone in narrating it, and he is da'if (weak) in hadith; Yahya bin Ma'in and other scholars of hadith said so.
Likewise what was narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution with two ratls and the ritual bath with a sa', which is eight ratls: the chains of both are weak. The authentic report from Anas is that he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform ablution with a mudd and the ritual bath with a sa', up to five mudds.
Then Sayyidah Asma bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her) related that they used to give sadaqat al-fitr with the sa' by which they measured their food.
This shows that the sa' of zakah and of food differs from the sa' of the ritual bath. Then Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) related that she and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to bathe from one vessel the size of a faraq, and we have shown that a faraq is three sa's. If the sa' is five and a third ratls, then the amount each of them bathed with was eight ratls, which is a sa' and a half. The amount used for the bath varied according to the usage, so there is no sense in abandoning, on account of something like this, the authentic hadiths on the size of the sa' set for sadaqat al-fitr. And success is from Allah.
