Abu Umamah bin Sahl bin Hunayf narrates from his father (Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf, may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade two kinds of dates: al-ju'rur and al-hubayq. Some people would deliberately pick out the worst of their fruits and give them as zakah, so they were forbidden these two kinds of dates, and this verse was revealed: "And do not aim for the bad (of it), spending from it." [Surah al-Baqarah: 267]
Abu al-Walid narrated it with a connected chain, while Muslim bin Ibrahim and Muhammad bin Kathir narrated it from Sulayman bin Kathir as mursal (without the Companion).

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah bin Sahl (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from his father that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the giving of charity and zakah, and a man brought a bunch of poor-quality dates. He (peace and blessings be upon him) saw it and said: "Who brought this?" (At that time) whatever anyone brought would be attributed to the one who brought it. Then this verse was revealed: "And do not aim for the bad (of it), spending from it." [Surah al-Baqarah: 267]. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the taking of poor-quality dates (al-ju'rur) and dull-coloured dates (al-hubayq) as zakah.

Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out with a staff in his hand. He saw some hanging clusters and struck them with the staff, and said: "It would not harm the owner of this wealth if he gave better than this in charity. The owner of these will eat poor-quality dates on the Day of Resurrection." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah, you will leave it, its fruit hanging low, abandoned for forty years to the 'awafi." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you know what the 'awafi are?" They said: "Allahu wa rasuluhu a'lam (Allah and His Messenger know best)." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It means birds and beasts of prey."

Sayyiduna al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Ansar used to give some poor-quality dates in zakah as well, so this verse was revealed: "O you who believe, spend from the good things you have earned and from what We have brought forth for you from the earth, and do not aim for the bad (of it), spending from it, while you yourselves would not take it except with closed eyes." [Surah al-Baqarah: 267]. The narrator said: Dun means something worthless and inferior. If you have a right due from someone and he gives you something less, he has reduced your right; if you accept it, that is ighmad (closing the eyes).
