أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْقَاضِي، قَالَا: ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الدُّورِيُّ، ثنا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، ثنا أَبِي، عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ كَيْسَانَ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو سَلَمَةَ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، وَابْنُ الْمُسَيِّبِ: أَنَّ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ أَخْبَرَهُمَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: نَعَى لَهُمُ النَّجَاشِيَّ صَاحِبَ الْحَبَشَةِ فِي الْيَوْمِ الَّذِي مَاتَ فِيهِ، فَقَالَ: " اسْتَغْفِرُوا لِأَخِيكُمْ " قَالَ: وَقَالَ ابْنُ شِهَابٍ: حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ الْمُسَيِّبِ أَنَّ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ أَخْبَرَهُ: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " صَفَّهُمْ فِي الْمُصَلَّى، فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ وَكَبَّرَ أَرْبَعًا ". رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ زُهَيْرِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بِالْإِسْنَادَيْنِ جَمِيعًا، وَرَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ عَنِ الْحُلْوَانِيِّ، وَالنَّاقِدُ، عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ.
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) announced the death of the Negus, the king of Abyssinia, on the very day he died, and said: "Seek forgiveness for your brother."
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) also related that he (peace and blessings be upon him) arranged the people in rows at the prayer ground, then prayed the funeral prayer and said four takbirs.

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو طَاهِرٍ الْفَقِيهُ، أنبأ أَبُو حَامِدٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى بْنِ بِلَالٍ الْبَزَّازُ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ الرَّبِيعِ الْمَكِّيُّ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " مَاتَ الْيَوْمَ رَجُلٌ صَالِحٌ، فَصَلُّوا عَلَى أَصْحَمَةَ " رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ أَبِي الرَّبِيعِ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، وَأَخْرَجَهُ مُسْلِمٌ مِنْ وَجْهٍ آخَرَ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Today a righteous man has died, so pray the funeral prayer over Ashamah."
وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، أنبأ عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ بْنُ عَطَاءٍ، أنبأ سَعِيدٌ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَمَّا بَلَغَهُ مَوْتُ النَّجَاشِيِّ، قَالَ: " صَلُّوا عَلَى أَخٍ لَكُمْ مَاتَ بِغَيْرِ بِلَادِكُمْ "، قَالَ: فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَصَفَّنَا صُفُوفًا. قَالَ جَابِرٌ: وَكُنْتُ فِي الصَّفِّ الثَّانِي أَوِ الثَّالِثِ، قَالَ: وَكَانَ اسْمُ النَّجَاشِيِّ أَصْحَمَةَ. أَخْرَجَهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ مِنْ وَجْهٍ آخَرَ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ مُخْتَصَرًا.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when news of the Negus's death reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Pray the funeral prayer over your brother who has died in a land other than yours." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed the funeral prayer over him, and we formed rows. Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was in the second or third row, and the name of the Negus was Ashamah.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو صَالِحِ بْنُ أَبِي طَاهِرٍ ابْنُ بِنْتِ يَحْيَى بْنِ مَنْصُورٍ الْقَاضِي، أنبأ جَدِّي، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ زُرَارَةَ، أنبأ إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ ⦗٨٣⦘ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي الْمُهَلَّبِ، عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: " إِنَّ أَخَاكُمْ قَدْ مَاتَ فَقُومُوا فَصَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ ". يَعْنِي النَّجَاشِيَّ. رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ حُجْرٍ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ وَرَوَاهُ يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ فَزَادَ فِيهِ، قَالَ: " فَصَفَّنَا خَلْفَهُ كَمَا يُصَفُّ عَلَى الْمَيِّتِ وَصَلَّيْنَا عَلَيْهِ كَمَا يُصَلَّى عَلَى الْمَيِّتِ "..
Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your brother (that is, the Negus) has died, so pray the funeral prayer over him." Yahya bin Abi Kathir narrates from Abu Qilabah (may Allah have mercy on him) with this addition: We formed rows behind him (peace and blessings be upon him) as they are formed for a deceased person, and we prayed the funeral prayer just as the funeral prayer is offered over a deceased person.
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ فُورَكٍ، أنبأ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، ثنا يُونُسُ بْنُ حَبِيبٍ، ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، ثنا حَرْبُ بْنُ شَدَّادٍ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، فَذَكَرَهُ بِمَعْنَاهُ وَزِيَادَتِهِ وَالنَّجَاشِيُّ كَانَ مُسْلِمًا وَفِي قَوْلِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِيمَا رُوِّينَاهُ دَلِيلٌ عَلَى ذَلِكَ.
Harb bin Shaddad narrates from Yahya bin Abi Kathir a similar hadith with the same meaning. And the Negus was a Muslim; there is evidence of this in the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that we have narrated.
وَفِي حَدِيثِ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ بْنِ أَبِي مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، فِي قِصَّةِ قُدُومِ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أَرْضَ الْحَبَشَةِ وَدُخُولِهِ عَلَى النَّجَاشِيِّ وَإِخْبَارِهِ إِيَّاهُ أَمْرَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَمَا يَقُولُ فِي عِيسَى ابْنِ مَرْيَمَ، وَإِعْجَابِهِ بِهِ، ثُمَّ قَوْلِهِ: " مَرْحَبًا بِكُمْ وَبِمَنْ جِئْتُمْ مِنْ عِنْدِهِ، فَأَنَا أَشْهَدُ أَنَّهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَنَّهُ الَّذِي بَشَّرَ بِهِ عِيسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ، وَلَوْلَا مَا أَنَا فِيهِ مِنَ الْمُلْكِ لَأَتَيْتُهُ حَتَّى أَحْمِلَ نَعْلَيْهِ " أَخْبَرَنَاهُ عَبْدُ الْخَالِقِ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْمُؤَذِّنُ، ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ خَنْبٍ، ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سَلَّامٍ السَّوَّاقُ، ثنا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُوسَى، أنبأ إِسْرَائِيلُ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ فَذَكَرَ الْقِصَّةَ، وَفِيهَا قَوْلُ النَّجَاشِيِّ الَّذِي حَكَيتُهُ.
Abu Burdah bin Abi Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates concerning Sayyiduna Ja'far bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) coming to Abyssinia, entering upon the Negus, informing him about the beloved Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the Negus's conversation about Isa bin Maryam, and his saying "Welcome", and that he said: I affirm that the one from whom you have come is the Messenger of Allah, and that he is indeed the one whose glad tidings Isa bin Maryam gave. Were it not for the kingship I am in, I would come to him and carry his sandals.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، مِنْ أَصْلِ كِتَابِهِ أنبأ أَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ الْأَعْرَابِيِّ، أنبأ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الزَّعْفَرَانِيُّ، ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، أنبأ الْعَلَاءُ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ الثَّقَفِيُّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ، قَالَ: كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِتَبُوكَ فَطَلَعَتِ الشَّمْسُ بِضِيَاءٍ وَنُورٍ وَشُعَاعٍ لَمْ أَرَهَا طَلَعَتْ فِيمَا مَضَى، فَأَتَى جَبْرَائِيلُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ: " يَا جَبْرَائِيلُ مَا لِي أَرَى الشَّمْسَ طَلَعَتْ بِضِيَاءٍ وَنُورٍ وَشُعَاعٍ لَمْ أَرَهَا طَلَعَتْ فِيمَا مَضَى "، فَقَالَ: ذَاكَ أَنَّ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنَ مُعَاوِيَةَ اللَّيْثِيَّ مَاتَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ الْيَوْمَ، فَبَعَثَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ إِلَيْهِ سَبْعِينَ أَلْفَ مَلَكٍ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَيْهِ، قَالَ: " وَفِيمَ ذَلِكَ "، قَالَ: كَانَ يُكْثِرُ قِرَاءَةَ {قُلْ هُوَ اللهُ أَحَدٌ} [الإخلاص: ١] بِاللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ، وَفِي مَمْشَاهُ، وَقِيَامِهِ، وَقُعُودِهِ، فَهَلْ لَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَنْ أَقْبِضَ لَكَ الْأَرْضَ، فَتُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ؟، قَالَ: " نَعَمْ "، فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ، ثُمَّ رَجَعَ "، الْعَلَاءُ هَذَا هُوَ ابْنُ زَيْدٍ، وَيُقَالُ: ابْنُ زَيْدَلٍ لَا يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ بِمَنَاكِيرَ. أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو سَعْدٍ الْمَالِينِيُّ، أَنْبَأَ أَبُو أَحْمَدَ بْنُ عَدِيٍّ، ثنا الْجُنَيْدِيُّ، ثنا الْبُخَارِيُّ قَالَ الْعَلَاءُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ الثَّقَفِيُّ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَوَى عَنْهُ يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ مُنْكَرُ الْحَدِيثِ ⦗٨٤⦘ قَالَ الشَّيْخُ: وَقَدْ رُوِيَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثُ مِنْ وَجْهٍ آخَرَ عَنْ أَنَسٍ.
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at Tabuk, and the sun rose with such light and radiance as I had not seen it rise with before. Jibra'il (peace be upon him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Jibra'il! What is the matter, that I see today the sun has risen with more radiance than before?" The trustworthy Jibra'il said: That is because Mu'awiyah bin Mu'awiyah al-Laythi has died in Madinah, and Allah, Glorified and Exalted, has sent seventy thousand angels to him who are praying for him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "For what reason?" Jibra'il (peace be upon him) said: He used to recite often, by night and day, while walking, sitting and standing, 'Say: He is Allah, the One' [Surah al-Ikhlas: 1] (al-Ikhlas). O Messenger of Allah! Shall I bring the earth near for you so that you (peace and blessings be upon him) may pray the funeral prayer over him? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed the funeral prayer over him and returned.
This al-Ala' is Ibn Zayd, and he is also called Ibn Zaydal. Al-Bukhari said: Al-Ala' bin Zayd Abu Muhammad al-Thaqafi, from Anas, from whom Yazid bin Harun narrated, is munkar al-hadith (his narrations are rejected). Al-Shaykh (al-Bayhaqi) said: This hadith has also been narrated through another route from Anas.
This al-Ala' is Ibn Zayd, and he is also called Ibn Zaydal. أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ الْقَطَّانُ، بِبَغْدَادَ، أنبأ أَبُو سَهْلِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ الْقَطَّانُ، ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الْقَاضِي، ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ الْهَيْثَمِ، ثنا مَحْبُوبُ بْنُ هِلَالٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي مَيْمُونَةَ يَعْنِي عَطَاءً، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، قَالَ: نَزَلَ جَبْرَائِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ، فَقَالَ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ مَاتَ مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ الْمُزَنِيُّ، أَفَتُحِبُّ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ؟ قَالَ: " نَعَمْ " قَالَ، فَضَرَبَ جَبْرَائِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ بِجَنَاحِهِ، فَلَمْ تَبْقَ شَجَرَةٌ، وَلَا أَكَمَةٌ إِلَّا تَضَعْضَعَتْ، وَرَفَعَ لَهُ سَرِيرَهَ حَتَّى نَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ وَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ، وَخَلْفَهُ صَفَّانِ مِنَ الْمَلَائِكَةِ كُلُّ صَفٍّ سَبْعُونَ أَلْفَ مَلَكٍ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِجَبْرَائِيلَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ: " يَا جَبْرَائِيلُ بِمَا نَالَ هَذِهِ الْمَنْزِلَةَ "، فَقَالَ: بِحُبِّهِ {قُلْ هُوَ اللهُ أَحَدٌ} [الإخلاص: ١] وَقِرَاءَتِهِ إِيَّاهَا جَائِيًا وَذَاهَبًا وَقَائِمًا وَقَاعِدًا " أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو سَعْدٍ الْمَالِينِيُّ، أنبأ أَبُو أَحْمَدَ بْنُ عَدِيٍّ الْحَافِظُ، قَالَ مَحْبُوبُ بْنُ هِلَالٍ الْمُزَنِيُّ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ أَبِي مَيْمُونَةَ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ: نَزَلَ جَبْرَائِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ. لَا يُتَابَعُ عَلَيْهِ. سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ حَمَّادٍ يَذْكُرُهُ عَنِ الْبُخَارِيِّ.
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said that Jibra'il (peace be upon him) descended and said: "O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Mu'awiyah bin Mu'awiyah al-Muzani has died. Would you like to pray the funeral prayer over him?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes." Jibra'il (peace be upon him) struck with his wing, so that no tree or hillock remained in between; all were moved aside. His bier was raised until he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw it, and he prayed the funeral prayer over him. Behind him were two rows of angels, each row of seventy thousand angels. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Jibra'il (peace be upon him): "O Jibra'il! How did he attain this rank?" He said: "It is because he loved 'Say: He is Allah, the One' [Surah al-Ikhlas: 1] and always recited it coming and going, sitting and standing."
Ibn Adi said: Mahbub bin Hilal al-Muzani narrated from Ata' bin Abi Maymunah from Anas, 'Jibra'il (peace be upon him) descended', and he is not corroborated in it. I heard Ibn Hammad mention this from al-Bukhari.
