Supplication in the funeral prayer

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When you offer the funeral prayer, make your supplication for him with sincerity."

Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led a funeral prayer, and I memorised his (peace and blessings be upon him) supplication; he (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated: 'Allahummaghfir lahu warhamhu wa afihi wa'fu anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi' alayhi mudkhalahu, waghsilhu bil-ma'i wath-thalji wal-barad, wa naqqihi minal-khataya kama yunaqqath-thawbul-abyadu minad-danas, wa abdilhu daran khayran min darihi, wa ahlan khayran min ahlihi, wa zawjatan khayran min zawjatihi, wa adkhilhul-jannah, wa a'idhhu min adhabil-qabri wa min adhabin-nar' (O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, pardon him and overlook his faults, elevate his station and make his grave spacious, wash him with water, snow and hail, and cleanse him of sins as a garment is cleansed of dirt; exchange his home for a better home, his family for a better family, and his spouse for a better spouse; admit him into Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of Hell), until I wished that I had been that deceased.

Abd al-Rahman bin Jubayr bin Nufayr narrates from his father, from Awf, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), a hadith similar to this one.

Mu'awiyah bin Salih (may Allah have mercy on him) also narrates this same hadith through two chains.

Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I offered a funeral prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I understood the supplication he made for him; it was: 'Allahummaghfir lahu warhamhu wa'fu anhu wa afihi, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi' alayhi mudkhalahu, waghsilhu bi-ma'i baradin aw thalj, wa naqqihi minal-khataya kama yunaqqath-thawbul-abyadu minad-danas, Allahumma abdilhu daran khayran min darihi, wa zawjan khayran min zawjihi, wa ahlan khayran min ahlihi, wa qihi fitnatal-qabri wa adhaban-nar' (O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, pardon him and grant him well-being, elevate his station and make his grave spacious, wash him with the water of hail or snow, and cleanse him of sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. O Allah, exchange his home for a better home, his spouse for a better spouse and his family for a better family, and protect him from the trial of the grave and the punishment of Hell.) Sayyiduna Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I wished that I were the one whose funeral this was.

It is narrated from a man of Banu Abd al-Ashhal that he said: My father narrated to me that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say in the funeral prayer: "O Allah, forgive our living and pardon our dead; those of us who are present and those who are absent; our men and our women, our old and our young."
Al-Awza'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Yahya bin Abi Kathir narrated this hadith to me from Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him), that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Man ahyaytahu minna fa-ahyihi alal-Islam, wa man tawaffaytahu minna fa-tawaffahu alal-iman' (Whomever of us You keep alive, keep him alive upon Islam, and whomever of us You cause to die, cause him to die upon faith.)

Bishr bin Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Al-Awza'i (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated the hadith to me through both chains, and at its beginning he said: 'Allahummaghfir li-awwalina wa akhirina wa hayyina wa mayyitina' (O Allah, forgive the first of us and the last of us, our living and our dead.)
This is the correct version: the hadith of Abu Ibrahim al-Ashhali is mawsul (connected), and the hadith of Abu Salamah is mursal.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) offered a funeral prayer, he would recite this supplication: 'Allahummaghfir li-hayyina wa mayyitina, wa shahidina wa gha'ibina, wa saghirina wa kabirina, wa dhakarina wa unthana, Allahumma man ahyaytahu minna fa-ahyihi alal-Islam, wa man tawaffaytahu minna fa-tawaffahu alal-iman' (O Allah, forgive us: our living and our dead, our absent and our present, our young and our old, our male and our female. O Allah, whomever of us You keep alive, keep him upon Islam, and whomever You cause to die, cause him to die in a state of faith.)

Urwah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) offered a funeral prayer, and he said 'faith' first and then 'Islam', and he further said these words: 'Allahumma la tahrimna ajrahu wa la tudillana ba'dahu' (O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward, nor lead us astray after him.)

Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) how he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer the funeral prayer, that is, how he used to supplicate. She said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: 'Allahummaghfir li-hayyina wa mayyitina, wa dhakarina wa unthana, wa gha'ibina wa shahidina, wa saghirina wa kabirina, Allahumma man ahyaytahu minna fa-ahyihi alal-Islam, wa man tawaffaytahu minna fa-tawaffahu alal-iman' (O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, our men and our women, our absent and our present, our young and our old. O Allah, whomever of us You keep alive, keep him alive upon Islam, and whomever of us You cause to die, cause him to die upon faith.)

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Qatadah narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he was present with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at a funeral. He said: I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Allahummaghfir li-hayyina wa mayyitina wa shahidina wa gha'ibina wa saghirina wa kabirina wa dhakarina wa unthana' (O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those of us who are present and those who are absent, our young and our old, and our men and our women.) And Abu Salamah (may Allah have mercy on him) added along with these words: 'Wa man ahyaytahu minna fa-ahyihi alal-Islam, wa man tawaffaytahu minna fa-tawaffahu alal-iman' (And whomever of us You keep alive, keep him alive upon Islam, and whomever You cause to die, grant him death upon faith.)

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite this supplication in the funeral prayer, and he narrated the full hadith.
Abu Isa al-Tirmidhi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Muhammad, meaning Imam al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him), about this chapter: "Which of the narrations from Yahya bin Abi Kathir about the prayer over the deceased is most authentic?" He said: "The most authentic thing in it is the hadith of Abu Ibrahim al-Ashhali from his father; his father was a Companion, and the name of Abu Ibrahim is not known." I said to him: "It is said that he is Abdullah bin Abi Qatadah?" He rejected that he was Abdullah bin Abi Qatadah and said: "Abu Qatadah is from Banu Salimah, and this man is from Banu Abd al-Ashhal." Imam al-Bukhari said: "The narration of Abu Salamah from Abu Hurayrah, Aishah and Abu Qatadah in this chapter is not preserved (ghayr mahfuz), and the most authentic thing in this chapter is the hadith of Awf bin Malik."

Ali bin Shammakh said: I was with Marwan when he asked Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): "Which supplication of the funeral prayer did you hear from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite: 'Allahumma anta rabbuha, wa anta khalaqtaha, wa anta hadaytaha ilal-Islam, wa anta qabadta ruhaha, fa-anta a'lamu bi-sirriha wa alaniyatiha, ji'na shufa'a'a faghfir laha' (O Allah, You are her Lord, You created her, You guided her to Islam, and You took her soul; You know best her hidden and her open affairs. We have come as intercessors, so forgive her.)
Shu'bah differed from him in its chain, and the narration of Abd al-Warith is more authentic.

Uthman bin Shammas said: Sa'id bin al-As sent me to Madinah, and I was with Marwan. Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by, and he (Marwan) said: "O Abu Hurayrah, (tell us) some of your hadiths!" Then he went on. Then Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) turned back towards us, and we said: "Now he will come down on him." Then he said: "How did you hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated over the deceased?" He said: 'Anta khalaqtaha aw khalaqtahu' (You created her, or: You created him), and he mentioned a similar supplication, except that he said: 'Ta'lamu sirraha wa alaniyataha' (You know her hidden and her open affairs).
Abu Balj Yahya bin Abi Sulaym narrated it mu'dal (with two consecutive narrators missing from the chain).

Yahya bin Abi Sulaym (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I heard al-Julas narrating that Marwan asked Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): "How did you hear (the funeral supplication) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?"
The correct one is the narration of Abd al-Warith bin Sa'id, and Allah knows best.

Uqbah bin Sayyar narrates from a man who said: We were sitting with Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) when Marwan came and stood over him and said: "O Abu Hurayrah, you keep narrating hadiths that we do not know." Then he went away, then came back and said: "O Abu Hurayrah, how is the funeral prayer over the deceased?" He said: "Along with what you said just now?" He said: "Yes." So he said: We used to say: 'Allahumma anta rabbuha' (O Allah, You are her Lord).

Shurahbil bin Sa'd said: I offered a funeral prayer with Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) at al-Abwa'. He said takbir, then recited Umm al-Qur'an (Surah al-Fatihah) aloud, and sent blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then recited this supplication: 'Allahumma abduka wabnu abdika wabnu amatika, yashhadu an la ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lahu, wa yashhadu anna Muhammadan abduka wa rasuluka, asbaha faqiran ila rahmatika, wa asbahta ghaniyyan an adhabihi, takhalla minad-dunya wa ahliha, in kana zakiyan fa-zakkihi, wa in kana mukhti'an faghfir lahu, Allahumma la tahrimna ajrahu wa la tudillana ba'dahu' (O Allah, this is Your servant, the son of Your servant and the son of Your maidservant. He bears witness that there is no god but Allah alone, without any partner, and bears witness that Muhammad is Your servant and Your Messenger. He has become in need of Your mercy, and You are free of any need to punish him. He has departed from the world and its people. If he was pure, then purify him; and if he was a wrongdoer, then forgive him. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward, and do not lead us astray after him.) Then he said three takbirs, then gave the salam, and then said: "O people! I recited it in front of you only so that you may know that it is the Sunnah."
The Shaykh said: Regarding the supplication in the funeral prayer, many hadiths are reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and then from Umar, Ali, Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with them). There is nothing fixed in the supplication, but what we have mentioned of some of them is sufficient.
