أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، أنبأ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الشَّيْبَانِيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ، أنبأ جَعْفَرٌ، ح وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَازِمِ بْنِ أَبِي غَرَزَةَ الْغِفَارِيُّ، ثنا جَعْفَرٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عَوْنٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ: أَنَّهُ صَلَّى عَلَى تِسْعِ جَنَائِزَ رِجَالٍ وَنِسَاءٍ فَجَعَلَ الرِّجَالَ مِمَّا يَلِي الْإِمَامَ وَالنِّسَاءَ مِمَّا يَلِي الْقِبْلَةَ، وَصَفَّهُمْ صَفًّا وَاحِدًا قَالَ: " وَوُضِعَتْ جِنَازَةُ أُمِّ كُلْثُومِ بِنْتِ عَلِيٍّ امْرَأَةِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمْ وَابْنٍ لَهَا يُقَالُ لَهُ: زَيْدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ وَالْإِمَامُ يَوْمَئِذٍ سَعِيدُ بْنُ الْعَاصِ وَفِي النَّاسِ يَوْمَئِذٍ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ، وَأَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ، وَأَبُو سَعِيدٍ، وَأَبُو قَتَادَةَ "، قَالَ: " فَوُضِعَ الْغُلَامُ مِمَّا يَلِي ⦗٥٣⦘ الْإِمَامَ "، قَالَ رَجُلٌ: فَأَنْكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ، فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، وَأَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، وَأَبِي سَعِيدٍ، وَأَبِي قَتَادَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمْ، فَقُلْتُ: مَا هَذَا؟ قَالُوا: السُّنَّةُ، لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ، وَفِي رِوَايَةِ أَبِي زَكَرِيَّا أَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ صَلَّى عَلَى تِسْعِ جَنَائِزَ جَمِيعًا وَقَالَ: فِي أُمِّ كُلْثُومٍ وَابْنِهَا فَوُضِعَا جَمِيعًا، وَالْبَاقِي سَوَاءٌ.
Nafi' reports from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he prayed the funeral prayer over nine men and women. He placed the men nearest the imam and the women beyond them towards the qiblah, and arranged them all in a single row. He said: The bier of Sayyidah Umm Kulthum bint Ali (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), and the bier of her son, who was called Zayd bin Umar, were placed (for prayer). The imam that day was Sa'id bin al-As, and among the people that day were also Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrator said: The boy was placed nearest the imam. A man said: I disapproved of this, so I looked at Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah, Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah and Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with them) and said: "What is this?" They said: "It is the Sunnah."
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الرُّوذْبَارِيُّ، أنبأ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ، ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ خَالِدِ بْنِ مَوْهَبٍ الرَّمْلِيُّ، ثنا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ صُبَيْحٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي عَمَّارٌ، مَوْلَى الْحَارِثِ بْنِ نَوْفَلٍ: " أَنَّهُ شَهِدَ جِنَازَةَ أُمِّ كُلْثُومٍ وَابْنِهَا، فَجَعَلَ الْغُلَامَ مِمَّا يَلِي الْإِمَامَ، فَأَنْكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ وَفِي الْقَوْمِ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ، وَأَبُو سَعِيدٍ، وَأَبُو قَتَادَةَ، وَأَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ، فَقَالُوا: هَذِهِ السُّنَّةُ "، وَرَوَاهُ حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ عَمَّارِ بْنِ أَبِي عَمَّارٍ دُونَ كَيْفِيَّةِ الْوَضْعِ بِنَحْوِهِ وَذَكَرَ أَنَّ الْإِمَامَ كَانَ ابْنَ عُمَرَ، قَالَ: وَكَانَ فِي الْقَوْمِ الْحَسَنُ، وَالْحُسَيْنُ، وَأَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ، وَابْنُ عُمَرَ وَنَحْوٌ مِنْ ثَمَانِينَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ. وَرَوَاهُ الشَّعْبِيُّ فَذَكَرَ كَيْفِيَّةَ الْوَضْعِ بِنَحْوِهِ وَذَكَرَ أَنَّ الْإِمَامَ كَانَ ابْنَ عُمَرَ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرِ السُّؤَالَ، قَالَ: وَخَلْفَهُ ابْنُ الْحَنَفِيَّةِ، وَالْحُسَيْنُ، وَابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ، وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ: وَعَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، وَرُوِّينَا فِي ذَلِكَ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ، وَعَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، وَوَاثِلَةَ بْنِ الْأَسْقَعِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ.
Ammar, the freed slave of al-Harith bin Nawfal, narrated that he attended the funeral of Umm Kulthum and her son. The boy was placed nearest the imam; I disapproved of this, and among the people were Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) and Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him). They said: "This is the Sunnah."
Hammad bin Salamah narrated it from Ammar bin Abi Ammar in a similar way, without (mentioning) the manner of placing (the biers), and mentioned that the imam was Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). He said: Among the people then were al-Hasan and al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both), Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), and around eighty (80) of the Companions of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him), however, described the same manner of placing them, and also that Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) led the prayer.

Sulayman bin Musa (may Allah have mercy on him) said that when the plague spread, Wathilah bin al-Asqa' (may Allah be pleased with him) was in Syria, and many people died there. He would pray the funeral prayer over men and women together: the men nearest to him and the women nearest the qiblah, and he would place the women's heads level with the men's knees.
