أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ فُورَكٍ، أنبأ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، ثنا يُونُسُ بْنُ حَبِيبٍ، ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ الطَّيَالِسِيُّ، ثنا هَمَّامٌ، ثنا أَبُو غَالِبٍ، قَالَ: " شَهِدْتُ أَنَسًا وَصَلَّى عَلَى رَجُلٍ فَقَامَ عِنْدَ رَأْسِ السَّرِيرِ، ثُمَّ أُتِيَ بِامْرَأَةٍ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهَا، فَقَامَ قَرِيبًا مِنْ وَسَطِ السَّرِيرِ وَكَانَ فِيمَنْ حَضَرَ جِنَازَتَهُ الْعَلَاءُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ الْعَدَوِيُّ، فَلَمَّا رَأَى اخْتِلَافَ قِيَامِهِ قَالَ: يَا أَبَا ⦗٥٤⦘ حَمْزَةَ أَهَكَذَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُومُ مِنَ الْمَرْأَةِ وَالرَّجُلِ كَمَا قُمْتَ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ قَالَ: فَأَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا يَعْنِي الْعَلَاءُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ وَقَالَ: احْفَظُوا ".
Abu Ghalib (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I went to Anas (may Allah be pleased with him). He prayed the funeral prayer over a man and stood by his head. Then the bier of a woman from Quraysh was brought, and he stood at about the middle of the bier and prayed over her. Among those attending the funeral was al-Ala' bin Ziyad al-Adawi (may Allah have mercy on him). When he saw the difference in where he stood, he said: "O Abu Hamzah! Is this how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to stand for a man and for a woman, just as you stood?" He said: "Yes!" Then al-Ala' (may Allah have mercy on him) turned to us and said: "Memorise this."
وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الرُّوذْبَارِيُّ، أنبأ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ، ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ هُوَ السِّجِسْتَانِيُّ، ثنا دَاوُدُ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ أَبِي غَالِبٍ، قَالَ: كُنْتُ فِي سِكَّةِ الْمِرْبَدِ فَمَرَّتْ جِنَازَةٌ مَعَهَا نَاسٌ كَثِيرٌ، قَالُوا: جِنَازَةُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ فَتَبِعْتُهَا فَلَمَّا وُضِعَتِ الْجِنَازَةُ، قَامَ أَنَسٌ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهَا وَأَنَا خَلْفَهُ لَا يَحُولُ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهُ شَيْءٌ، فَقَامَ عِنْدَ رَأْسِهِ فَكَبَّرَ أَرْبَعَ تَكْبِيرَاتٍ لَمْ يُطِلْ وَلَمْ يُسْرِعْ، ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ يَقْعُدُ، فَقَالُوا: يَا أَبَا حَمْزَةَ الْمَرْأَةُ الْأَنْصَارِيَّةُ فَقَرَّبُوهَا وَعَلَيْهَا نَعْشٌ أَخْضَرُ، فَقَامَ عِنْدَ عَجِيزَتِهَا فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهَا نَحْوَ صَلَاتِهِ عَلَى الرَّجُلِ ثُمَّ جَلَسَ، فَقَالَ الْعَلَاءُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ: يَا أَبَا حَمْزَةَ أَهَكَذَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي عَلَى الْجِنَازَةِ كَصَلَاتِكَ يُكَبِّرُ عَلَيْهَا أَرْبَعًا، وَيَقُومُ عِنْدَ رَأْسِ الرَّجُلِ وَعَجِيزَةِ الْمَرْأَةِ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ وَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ، قَالَ أَبُو غَالِبٍ فَسَأَلْتُ عَنْ صَنِيعِ أَنَسٍ فِي قِيَامِهِ عَلَى الْمَرْأَةِ عِنْدَ عَجِيزَتِهَا، فَحَدَّثُونِي أَنَّهُ إِنَّمَا كَانَ لِأَنَّهُ لَمْ تَكُنِ النُّعُوشُ فَكَانَ يَقُومُ الْإِمَامُ حِيَالَ عَجِيزَتِهَا يَسْتُرُهَا مِنَ الْقَوْمِ.
Abu Ghalib Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I was in the Mirbad street when a funeral passed by accompanied by many people. They said: It was the funeral of Abdullah bin Umayr, so I followed it. When the bier was set down, Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and led the funeral prayer, and I was behind him with nothing between me and him. He stood by his head and said four takbirs, neither prolonging them nor hurrying. Then he went to sit down, and the people said: "O Abu Hamzah! This is the Ansari woman." They brought her near, and over her was a green bier-canopy. He stood by her waist and prayed over her just as he had prayed over the man, then he sat down. Al-Ala' bin Ziyad said: "O Abu Hamzah! Is this how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray funeral prayers, as you have prayed, saying four takbirs and standing by the head of the man and the waist of the woman?" He said: "Yes." And he narrated the rest of the hadith.
Abu Ghalib said: I asked about what Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) did in standing level with the woman's waist at her funeral, and they told me: That was because in those days there were no bier-canopies, so the imam would stand level with her waist to screen her from the people.

وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ كَامِلٍ الْقَاضِي، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ الْعَوْفِيُّ، ثنا رَوْحُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ، ثنا حُسَيْنُ الْمُعَلِّمُ، ح وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، وَإِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ قُتَيْبَةَ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ السَّلَامِ، قَالُوا: ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى، أنبأ عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ حُسَيْنِ بْنِ ذَكْوَانَ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ بُرَيْدَةَ، عَنْ سَمُرَةَ بْنِ جُنْدُبٍ، قَالَ: " صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى أُمِّ كَعْبٍ مَاتَتْ وَهِيَ نُفَسَاءُ، فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِلصَّلَاةِ عَلَيْهَا وَسَطَهَا " لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ يَحْيَى، رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ يَحْيَى، وَرَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ، عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ مَيْسَرَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْوَارِثِ.
Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I prayed behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he prayed the funeral prayer over Umm Ka'b, who had died during her postnatal bleeding, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood level with her middle and led the prayer.
