Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: The sun was eclipsed, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed with the people along with him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) stood for a long time, about as long as the recitation of Surah al-Baqarah; and in the narration of Abu Mus'ab it says that he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited about the like of Surah al-Baqarah. Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) says: This is evidence that he did not hear his (peace and blessings be upon him) recitation; had he heard it, he would not have estimated it by something else.

Tha'labah (may Allah have mercy on him), who was from Banu Abd al-Qays, narrates from Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) that in his sermon he described the prayer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) during the solar eclipse. He said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) came forward and led the people in prayer, and we were with him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) stood for a long time, as he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do in his prayers, and we did not hear his voice. He bowed for as long as he used to, and still we did not hear his voice. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) did the same in the second rak'ah.

Urwah narrates from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the sun was eclipsed in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) went out and led the people in prayer. I estimated his recitation and I saw that he had recited Surah al-Baqarah. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed two prostrations, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood and recited at length. I estimated his (peace and blessings be upon him) recitation and I thought that he had recited Surah Al Imran.
