Al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him): The sun was eclipsed in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) led a prayer of two rak'ahs.

(a) Al-Hasan narrates from Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him): We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when the sun was eclipsed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out dragging his cloak until he reached the mosque. The people also hurried, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in a prayer of two rak'ahs. When the eclipse ended, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah. Through them Allah causes His servants to fear. They do not lose their light for anyone's death or life. When you see the sun or the moon eclipsed, pray until what has befallen you is removed." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said this when people said that it had happened because of his (peace and blessings be upon him) son Ibrahim.
(b) In another narration it is reported from Abu Ma'mar that he did not mention the words 'through them Allah causes His servants to fear.'
(c) He (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in a prayer of two rak'ahs when his (peace and blessings be upon him) son Ibrahim died. What is meant by this is that he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed two bowings in each rak'ah, as is established from Ibn Abbas, Aishah, Jabir and Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them); but Yazid bin Zuray' and others narrate from Yunus bin Ubayd that they said in the hadith: he prayed two rak'ahs as you pray.

Yazid bin Zuray' (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Yunus (may Allah have mercy on him): "as you pray," but he did not mention the death of his (peace and blessings be upon him) son. The eclipse prayer was well known among them, so he alluded to it.

(a) Abd al-Rahman bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I was practising with my arrows during the lifetime of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when suddenly the sun was eclipsed. I threw them down and said: "I must see what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) does today at the solar eclipse." I reached him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) had raised his hands and was glorifying Allah (tasbih), praising Him (tahmid), declaring His oneness (tahlil), magnifying Him (takbir) and supplicating, until the eclipse ended. He (peace and blessings be upon him) recited two surahs and prayed two rak'ahs.
(b) "He (peace and blessings be upon him) recited two surahs and prayed two rak'ahs": this may mean that he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed two bowings in each rak'ah, as has been established.

Sayyiduna Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The sun was eclipsed in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the mosque alarmed, dragging his garment. He (peace and blessings be upon him) remained engaged in prayer until the sun became bright. When the sun became bright, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "People think that the sun and the moon lose their light only for the death of some great person, but it is not so. The sun and the moon do not lose their light for anyone's death or life; rather, they are two of the signs of Allah. When Allah manifests Himself to anything of His creation, it humbles itself before Him. When you see them (eclipsed), pray like the obligatory prayer."
This is mursal: Abu Qilabah did not hear it from al-Nu'man bin Bashir; he narrated it only from a man from al-Nu'man, and that narration does not contain this last wording.

Sayyiduna Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The sun was eclipsed in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed two rak'ahs and gave the salam, then prayed two rak'ahs and gave the salam, until the sun became bright. In the Jahiliyyah, people used to say that when the sun loses its light, it is because of the death of some great person among the people of the earth. (He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) "But the matter is not so; rather, these two are among the creations of Allah. When Allah manifests Himself to anything of His creation, it fears Him. So when you see that, pray."

Sayyiduna Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came hurriedly to the mosque dragging his cloak, and the sun had been eclipsed. He (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed until the sun became bright, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In the Jahiliyyah people used to say that the sun and the moon lose their light only because of some great person among the people of the earth, whereas the sun and the moon do not lose their light for anyone's death, for they are both creations of Allah, and Allah does in His creation whatever He wills. So whichever of them loses its light, pray until it becomes bright, or until Allah brings about some other matter."
This is more likely to be the preserved (mahfuz) version; it has also been said: from Abu Qilabah from Qabisah al-Hilali.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب صلاة الخسوف / 6337
Qabisah al-Hilali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The sun was eclipsed in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) led them in a prayer of two rak'ahs and prolonged the standing in those two rak'ahs. The narrator says: The sun became bright, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These are signs through which Allah causes His servants to fear. So when you see them, pray as you pray the obligatory prayer."
Abu Qilabah did not hear this one from Qabisah either; he narrated it only from a man from Qabisah.

(a) Qabisah al-Hilali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates, with the meaning of the hadith of Musa bin Isma'il, that the sun was eclipsed until the stars appeared. The wording of all these hadiths indicates that they refer to the prayer the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered on the day his son Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him) died. A group of the companions of the hadith masters affirmed the number of his bowings in each rak'ah, so their narration is more worthy of acceptance than the narration of whoever did not affirm it.
(b) Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned the argument of those who argued from the hadith of Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the eclipse prayer as two rak'ahs "like your prayer", from the hadith of Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him), which has the same meaning, and from the hadith of Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him). Then he gave preference to our hadiths, because the one who brings an addition is more worthy of having his word accepted, since he affirms what the one who shortened the hadith did not affirm, and because the chain of our hadith is among the most established chains.
