Sa'id bin Abi Sa'id al-Maqburi narrates from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! At which hour of the day and night would you forbid me to pray?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you have prayed the Fajr prayer, refrain from prayer until the sun has risen high, for it rises between the two horns of Satan. Then the angels attend the prayer, and it is accepted until midday. When it is midday, refrain from prayer until the sun declines, for at that time Hell is stoked, since the intensity of the heat is from the blast of Hell. Then, when the sun has declined, it is a prayer that the angels attend and it is accepted until you pray the Asr prayer. After the Asr prayer, refrain from prayer until the sun sets; then it is a prayer that the angels attend and it is accepted as well, until you pray the Fajr prayer."

(a) Ibn Abi Dhi'b narrates from Shu'bah, the freed slave of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): I used to lead Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) to the place of Eid prayer; he would offer voluntary prayer in the mosque, and then would not come back to it again. (b) Azraq bin Qays narrates from them: I heard from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) about a man who used to pray on the day of Eid before the imam came out and before the prayer. He said: Allah Almighty does not turn back upon a servant the good deed that he does for Him.

Abdullah bin Buraydah (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I saw my father, Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him), performing ablution on the day of Eid; then he prayed four rak'ahs in his house, then he took my hand and we went to the place of Eid prayer, and he sat close to the imam where he could hear the sermon. When the prayer was completed, he did not pray before it or after it, until he returned to his house and prayed four rak'ahs in the house. Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) used to pray before the imam on the day of Eid, and Urwah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) used to pray before and after the prayer on the day of Eid al-Fitr. Al-Qasim bin Muhammad (may Allah have mercy on him) used to pray four rak'ahs before going to the place of Eid prayer, and Muhammad bin Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) used to pray eight rak'ahs after the Eid.
Note: One group dislikes praying before and after the Eid, some people do not dislike praying after it, and some dislike praying in the place of Eid prayer but do not dislike praying in the mosque and at home on the day of Eid.
The day of Eid is like all other days, and once the sun has risen high, prayer becomes permissible wherever it is offered.
