Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: I was present with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of Eid. He (peace and blessings be upon him) first led the prayer without adhan or iqamah, and gave the sermon afterwards. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) leaned on Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), commanded the people to be mindful of Allah (taqwa) and to obey Him, and exhorted and admonished them. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) leaned on Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) and he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the women. He commanded them to be mindful of Allah, urged them to obedience, exhorted and admonished them, and said: "Give charity, for most of you are fuel for Hell." He said: A woman of low standing with darkened cheeks stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Why?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You curse a great deal and are ungrateful to your husbands." So the women were taking off their necklaces, earrings and rings and throwing them into the cloth of Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him).

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: I attended Eid with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). All of them used to pray before the sermon and then deliver the sermon. He said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came down from the pulpit and was seating the men with a gesture of his hand. Then he came through their midst to the women, and Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) was with him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Prophet, when the believing women come to you, pledging allegiance to you" [Surah al-Mumtahanah: 12]. Then, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished with them, he said: "Remain upon this." One woman said, and no one other than her answered him: Yes, O Prophet of Allah!

Ata bin Abi Rabah (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I heard Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) say: I bear witness concerning the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed before the sermon, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered the sermon. He (peace and blessings be upon him) thought that the women had not heard (his voice), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) came (to them), exhorted and admonished them, and commanded them to give charity. Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) was also with him (peace and blessings be upon him), holding his cloth spread out, and the women were throwing their earrings into it.

Nafi' narrates from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to lead the prayer before the sermon.

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Marwan bin al-Hakam had the pulpit brought out on the day of Eid, and he began the sermon before the prayer. A man stood up and said: Marwan! You have gone against the Sunnah. You had the pulpit brought out on the day of Eid, although it was never brought out before, and you began the sermon before the prayer, although the sermon used to come after the prayer. Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Who was that? They said: It was so-and-so son of so-and-so. Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) said: As for this man, he has fulfilled what was upon him. I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever sees an evil and has the power to stop it with his hand, let him stop it; otherwise let him forbid it with his tongue; and if he does not have even that much power, let him hate it in his heart. That is the weakest of faith."

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out for Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, he would pray before the sermon, and after finishing the prayer he would stand and turn towards the people while they were sitting in their places. If there was a need for an army expedition, he would mention it to the people; if there was some other need, he would give an order about it. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) would say: "Give charity," and it was the women who gave the most charity; then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would leave. This remained the case until the time of Marwan bin al-Hakam came. I went out with Marwan bin al-Hakam and we came to the place of Eid prayer. There, Kathir bin al-Salt had built a pulpit of clay and bricks, and Marwan was pulling his hand away as though he were taking me towards the pulpit, while I was pulling him towards the prayer. When I saw that, I said: The beginning is with the prayer. Marwan said: O Abu Sa'id! The practice that you know has been abandoned. I said: Never! By the One in whose hand is my soul, you will not bring anything better than what I know. (He said this) three times, then he left.
