Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out for Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, he would pray before the sermon, and after finishing the prayer he would stand and turn towards the people while they were sitting in their places. If there was a need for an army expedition, he would mention it to the people; if there was some other need, he would give an order about it. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) would say: "Give charity," and it was the women who gave the most charity; then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would leave. This remained the case until the time of Marwan bin al-Hakam came. I went out with Marwan bin al-Hakam and we came to the place of Eid prayer. There, Kathir bin al-Salt had built a pulpit of clay and bricks, and Marwan was pulling his hand away as though he were taking me towards the pulpit, while I was pulling him towards the prayer. When I saw that, I said: The beginning is with the prayer. Marwan said: O Abu Sa'id! The practice that you know has been abandoned. I said: Never! By the One in whose hand is my soul, you will not bring anything better than what I know. (He said this) three times, then he left.
