(a) Sayyiduna Abu Ayyash al-Zuraqi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at a place called Usfan, and the commander of the polytheists was Khalid bin al-Walid. We prayed Zuhr, and the polytheists said: "We were heedless; if only we had attacked them while they were in prayer." Then, between Zuhr and Asr, the verse of shortening (the prayer) was revealed. When the time of Asr came, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood facing the qiblah, and the polytheists were in front of him (peace and blessings be upon him). Two rows formed behind him (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed and they all bowed; then he (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrated, and the row that was next to him (peace and blessings be upon him) also prostrated, while the other row stood keeping guard. When those of the first row had made the two prostrations and stood up, those of the second row, who were behind him (peace and blessings be upon him), prostrated. Then the first row moved back to the place of the second row, and the second row moved forward to the place of the first row. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed and they all bowed. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrated along with those who were near him (peace and blessings be upon him), that is, the first row, while the others remained standing, keeping guard. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the row that was next to him (peace and blessings be upon him) sat, the others prostrated; then they all sat. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the salam with all of them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) led this prayer once at Usfan and once among Banu Sulaym.
(b) In the hadith of Yahya bin Yahya (may Allah have mercy on him) there are some additional words: The people took up their weapons and formed rows behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) facing the qiblah, and the polytheists were facing them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir and they all said the takbir; he (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed and they all bowed. Then he raised his head from bowing and they all raised their heads. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrated, and the row that was near him (peace and blessings be upon him) also prostrated.
This chain is sahih (authentic).

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the fear prayer, and we formed two rows behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The enemy was between us and the qiblah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir and we also said the takbir. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed, and we also bowed. Then he raised his head from bowing and we also raised ours. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went down into prostration along with the row that was with him (peace and blessings be upon him), while the second row remained standing facing the enemy. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the first row had completed the prostrations and stood up, the second row prostrated. When they had completed their prostrations and stood up, the rear row moved forward and the first row moved back. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed and we also bowed. He (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head from bowing and we also raised ours. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went down into prostration, and the front row, which had been at the back in the first rak'ah, also went down into prostration. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) had completed the prostration, and the front row as well, the second row went down into prostration. They completed their prostrations.
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Just as these guards of yours do with their commanders.

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We fought against (a people of) Juhaynah, and the fighting was extremely fierce. When we had prayed Zuhr, the polytheists said: If we attack them all at once, we will cut them down. Jibril (peace be upon him) informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of this. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned this to us: "They are saying that a prayer will soon come which is more beloved to them than their children." When the time of prayer came, we formed two rows, and the polytheists were between us and the qiblah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir and we also said the takbir; he (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed and we also bowed. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrated, and the first row prostrated with him (peace and blessings be upon him). When they stood up, the second row prostrated; then the first row moved back and the second row moved forward. When they stood in the place of the first, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir and we also said the takbir, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed and we also bowed. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrated, and the first row prostrated with him (peace and blessings be upon him) while the second row remained standing; then the second row prostrated. Then they all remained seated, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the salam with all of them. Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Just as your commanders pray.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The fear prayer was just like the prayer of these guards of yours today behind your imams, except that it was in turns: one group would stand, while they were all with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and one group would prostrate with him (peace and blessings be upon him). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would stand, and the group that had been standing would make the prostrations by themselves. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would stand and they would all stand with him (peace and blessings be upon him); then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would bow and they would all bow with him (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would prostrate, and those who had remained standing the first time would prostrate with him (peace and blessings be upon him), while those who had prostrated with him (peace and blessings be upon him) the first time remained standing. Then when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sat, along with those who had prostrated with him (peace and blessings be upon him) at the end of their prayer, those who had remained standing made their prostrations. Then they remained seated, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gathered both groups together in the salam.
