Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) heard that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying that on Friday he (peace and blessings be upon him) praised and extolled Allah, and then after that he was delivering the sermon in a loud voice; his (peace and blessings be upon him) anger had become intense and his cheeks had turned red, as though he (peace and blessings be upon him) were warning of an army that would attack you in the morning or the evening. Then he would say: "I and the Hour have been sent like this," and he (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed with his middle finger and the finger next to the thumb. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best speech is the Book of Allah, the best way is the way of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), the worst of matters are the newly invented ones, and every innovation is misguidance. Whoever leaves behind wealth, it is for his family, and whoever leaves behind a debt or loss, that is my responsibility."

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would address the people, praising and extolling Allah as He deserves, and then he would say: "Whomever Allah guides, there is none to lead him astray, and whomever He leads astray, there is none to guide him. The best speech is the Book of Allah, the best way is the way of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), the worst of matters are the newly invented matters, every newly invented matter is an innovation, and every innovation is misguidance." And when he (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the Hour, his (peace and blessings be upon him) voice would become loud, his cheeks would turn red and his anger would intensify, as though he (peace and blessings be upon him) were warning of an army that would attack you in the morning or the evening. (And he (peace and blessings be upon him) would say:) "Whoever leaves behind wealth, it is for his heirs, and whoever leaves behind a debt or dependents, that is my responsibility, and I am the guardian of the believers."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Dimad came to Makkah; he was from Azd Shanu'ah and used to perform ruqyah (incantation) against magic. He heard the foolish people of Makkah saying that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was insane. He thought: If I were to see this man, perhaps Allah would cure him at my hands. Dimad met him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Muhammad! I perform ruqyah for this illness, and Allah cures whomever He wills at my hands; do you also have this illness? So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the sermon: 'Inna al-hamda lillahi nahmaduhu wa nasta'inuhu, man yahdihillahu fala mudilla lahu, wa man yudlil fala hadiya lahu, wa ashhadu an la ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lahu, wa anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluhu, amma ba'd' "All praise is for Allah; we praise Him and seek His help. Whomever He guides, none can lead astray, and whomever He leads astray, none can guide.
I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, He is alone and has no partner, and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and Messenger." Dimad said: Repeat these words of yours, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited these words three times. Dimad said: I have heard the speech of soothsayers, and I have also heard the speech of sorcerers and poets, but I have never heard words like these, for they are supremely eloquent. Dimad said: Extend your hand; I pledge allegiance to you on Islam. Then he pledged allegiance. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On behalf of your people as well?" Dimad said: Yes, on behalf of my people as well. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent out a military detachment, and they passed by Dimad's people. The commander of the army said: Did you take anything from these people? A man said: I took a water vessel. He said: Return it, for these are the people of Dimad.

Abu al-Ahwas narrates from Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught us the sermon of need:
"'Al-hamdu lillahi nahmaduhu wa nasta'inuhu wa nastaghfiruhu, wa na'udhu billahi min shururi anfusina, man yahdihillahu fala mudilla lahu, wa man yudlil fala hadiya lahu, ashhadu an la ilaha illallahu wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluhu' (All praise is for Allah; we praise Him, seek His help and seek His forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evils of our souls. Whomever Allah guides, none can lead astray, and whomever He leads astray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.) [Surah Al Imran: 102] 'Fear Allah as He should be feared, and do not die except as Muslims.' [Surah al-Nisa: 1] 'And fear Allah, the One through whom you ask one another (your rights) and (fear the severing of) the ties of kinship; indeed, Allah is ever watchful over you.' [Surah al-Ahzab: 70-71] 'O you who believe! Fear Allah and speak words that are right. He will set right your deeds for you and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great success.'"

I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and Messenger. He sent him with the truth as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner before the Hour. Whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger has been rightly guided, and whoever disobeys will not harm Allah in the least; he will only harm himself."

Yunus asked Ibn Shihab about the Friday sermon of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and Ibn Shihab said: "All praise is for Allah; we praise Him, seek His help and seek His forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allah from the evils of our souls. Whomever Allah guides, none can lead astray, and whomever He leads astray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the servant and Messenger of Allah. He sent him before the Hour as a warner and a bearer of glad tidings. Whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger has been rightly guided, and whoever disobeys them both has gone astray. We ask Allah to make us among those who obey You and obey Your Messenger, who seek His pleasure and avoid His displeasure. We exist only through Him and for Him."
Ibn Shihab says that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would say in the sermon: "That which is coming near is not far. Allah does not hasten anything because of someone's haste, and He encompasses the affairs of people as He wills, not according to the wishes of people. Allah wills something and people will something else, but what happens is what Allah wills, even if people dislike it. Whomever Allah brings near, none can put him far, and whomever Allah puts far, none can bring him near. Nothing happens without the permission of Allah."
Ibn Shihab says: Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say in his sermon: Successful is the one who has been protected from desires, greed and anger. There is no good except in truthful speech. Whoever lies commits sin, and sin destroys. Beware of sin. The wicked man was created from dust and will return to it. He is alive today and dead tomorrow, so act every day. Beware of the supplication of the oppressed, and count yourselves among the dead.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say in his sermon: Successful is the one who has been protected from desires, greed and anger, and who has been granted the ability to be truthful in speech; it will lead him to goodness. Whoever lies becomes a sinner. Then he mentioned what follows it.

He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Which month is the most sacred?" The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) replied: This very month is the most sacred. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Which city is the most sacred?" The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) replied: This very city. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your blood and your wealth are sacred to one another among you, just as the sanctity of this day of yours, this month and this city."

So act, and fear Allah. Know that your deeds will be presented to you, and that you will certainly meet your Lord." [Surah al-Zalzalah: 7-8]
