Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud al-Badri (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one who has read the most Qur'an and is earliest in migration should lead the people in prayer; if they are equal in recitation, then the one earliest in migration. If they are equal in migration, then the eldest. No one should lead another in prayer in his house or within his authority, nor sit on his place of honour without permission," or he said: "unless he gives him permission."

Ma'bad bin Khalid reports from Abdullah bin Yazid al-Khatmi (may Allah be pleased with him), who was the governor of Kufah, that he said: We came to Qays bin Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) at his house, and the adhan for prayer was called. We said to Qays (may Allah be pleased with him): "Lead the congregation." He said: "I will not lead in prayer a people over whom I am not the ruler." Then another man, Abdullah bin Hanzalah (may Allah be pleased with him), said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man has more right to the front of his mount, likewise to his own bedding in his house, and he has more right to lead the prayer in his own home." So Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) said to his freed slave: "Stand up and lead them in prayer."
