Abu Atiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him), who was our freed slave, says: Malik bin al-Huwayrith (may Allah be pleased with him) came to us in this mosque, and the iqamah for prayer was called. We said to him: "Lead the prayer." He said: "Put forward a man of your own to lead the prayer, and I will soon tell you why I do not lead you in prayer. For I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever visits a people should not lead them in prayer; rather, a man from among them should lead them.'"

Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) says: The iqamah was called in a mosque on the outskirts of Madinah. Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) had land near that mosque which he worked. The imam of that mosque was his freed slave, and that freed slave and his companions lived there. When they learned that Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) had come for the prayer, they said: "Go forward and lead the congregation." Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "You have more right to lead the congregation in your own mosque." So his freed slave led the congregation.

Huzayl bin Shurahbil (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) came to our mosque, and the iqamah was called. We said: "Go forward and lead the congregation." He said: "Let your imam go forward and lead the congregation." We said: "Our imam is not present here." He said: "Then let someone else go forward." So that man stood on a raised platform in the mosque, and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) forbade him from that.
