Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) used to pray the Isha prayer with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then go to Banu Salimah and lead them in the Isha prayer. The narrator says: One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the Isha prayer. Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) prayed with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then he went back and led his people in prayer, and in it he recited Surah al-Baqarah. A man separated himself and prayed on his own. They said: "Have you become a hypocrite?" He said: "No, I will go to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)," and he went and said: "O Messenger of Allah! You (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the prayer, and Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) prayed with you, then came back and led us, and he began Surah al-Baqarah. When I saw that, I stepped back and prayed on my own. We are only people who draw water, working with our own hands." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "O Mu'adh! Are you one who causes trial (fitnah)? O Mu'adh! Are you one who causes trial? Recite such-and-such a surah."
