Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose hand is my soul! I intended to order that firewood be gathered, then to order the prayer and have the adhan given, and to order someone to lead the people in congregation, then to go to those men and burn their houses down with them inside. By the One in whose hand is my soul! If one of them knew that he would find a fatty bone or two good bones, he would certainly attend the Isha prayer."

If they knew how much reward there is in them, they would come to them even crawling on their knees. I intended to order that the prayer be established, then to order a man to lead the people in prayer, and then to take with me some men carrying bundles of firewood to those who do not attend the prayer, and burn their houses down with fire with them inside."

(b) I said to Yazid bin al-Asamm: O Abu Awf, (did he mean) the Jumu'ah or something else? He said: May both my ears become deaf if I did not hear Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrating it from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he mentioned neither the Jumu'ah nor anything else.

The majority narrated it from Sa'id as mawquf on Ibn Abbas, and it has been narrated from Abu Musa al-Ash'ari both as musnad and as mawquf; the mawquf is more authentic. And Allah knows best.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A blind man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I have no one to bring me to the prayer; grant me a concession to pray at home. He (peace and blessings be upon him) granted him the concession. When he turned to leave, he (peace and blessings be upon him) called him back and asked: "Do you hear the adhan?" He said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then come to the mosque for the prayer."

He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you hear the adhan?" I said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not find a concession for you."

He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you hear 'Hayya 'ala al-salah, hayya 'ala al-falah' (Come to the prayer, come to success)? Then come to the prayer."
Note: Abu Bakr bin Ishaq the jurist said: In his ordering this blind man to attend the congregation there is nothing to indicate that attending it is obligatory, because he (peace and blessings be upon him) granted Itban bin Malik, who was blind, a concession to stay away from attending it. This indicates that his saying "I do not find a concession for you" means: I do not find for you a concession by which you would attain the virtue of the one who attends it.

Al-Ala' bin al-Musayyab narrates from his father that Sayyiduna Ibn Umm Maktum (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If the one who stays away from these two prayers knew what reward and recompense there is in them, he would certainly come to them, even if he had to come crawling on his knees."

Abu al-Ahwas (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Whoever would like to meet Allah tomorrow in the state of being a Muslim, let him guard these prayers, whenever the call (adhan) is given for them. For Allah has laid down for your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the ways of guidance, and these are among the ways of guidance. If you were to start praying them in your homes, like these who stay behind from the prayer, you would abandon the Sunnah of your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). And if you abandoned the Sunnah of your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), you would go astray. Whoever performs ablution well and then comes to one of these mosques, Allah records a good deed for him for every step, raises him a degree and erases one wrong. None stayed behind from these prayers except a hypocrite whose hypocrisy was evident, while a believing man would be brought, supported between two men, and made to stand in the row.

Abd al-Rahman bin Harmalah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The difference between us and the hypocrites is attending the Fajr and Isha prayers; they do not have the strength to attend them."
Note: Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the intention of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to burn people's houses was because they did not attend the Isha prayer due to hypocrisy.
