Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade a gold ring, silk and yellow-dyed clothing, and reciting the Qur'an in prostration. He said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me a striped silk garment. I went out wearing it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ali, I did not give it to you to wear." Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a gold ring on a man's hand. He took it off, threw it away and said: "One of you deliberately takes an ember of fire and puts it on his hand." After the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had left, the man was told: "Pick up your ring and make use of it." He said: "By Allah! Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had a gold ring made. He (peace and blessings be upon him) used to keep its stone towards his palm, and the people also had rings made. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) threw it away and then had a silver ring made. That ring then remained on the hand of him (peace and blessings be upon him), of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), until it fell into the well of Aris.
