أنبأ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ، ثنا آدَمُ بْنُ أَبِي إِيَاسٍ، ثنا شُعْبَةُ، ثنا قَتَادَةُ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عُثْمَانَ النَّهْدِيَّ يَقُولُ: " أَتَانَا كِتَابُ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، وَنَحْنُ مَعَ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ فَرْقَدٍ بِأَذْرَبِيجَانَ " أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنِ الْحَرِيرِ إِلَّا هَكَذَا، وَأَشَارَ بِإِصْبَعَيْهِ اللَّتَيْنِ يَلِيَانِ الْإِبْهَامَ قَالَ: فَمَا عَتَّمْنَا أَنَّهُ يَعْنِي الْأَعْلَامَ " رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ، عَنْ آدَمَ وَأَخْرَجَهُ مُسْلِمٌ مِنْ وَجْهٍ آخَرَ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ.
Abu Uthman al-Nahdi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A letter from Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came to us while we were with Uqbah bin Farqad (may Allah be pleased with him) in Azerbaijan, saying that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) "forbade silk, but permitted silk to the width of two fingers."
Abu Uthman said: We did not take long to understand that he meant the embroidered borders (of a garment).

أنبأ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، وَأَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرٍو قَالَا: ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ، يَعْنِي ابْنَ عَطَاءٍ، أنبأ سَعِيدٌ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، عَنْ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ غَفَلَةَ أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ خَطَبَ النَّاسَ بِالْجَابِيَةِ، فَقَالَ: " إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنْ لُبْسِ الْحَرِيرِ إِلَّا مَوْضِعَ إِصْبَعٍ، أَوْ إِصْبَعَيْنِ، أَوْ ثَلَاثٍ، أَوْ أَرْبَعٍ " وَأَشَارَ بِكَفِّهِ وَعَقَدَ خَمْسَيْنِ " رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ الرَّازِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ.
Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), while delivering a sermon at a place called al-Jabiyah, said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) "forbade wearing silk, but permitted silk to the width of one, two, three or four fingers."
أنبأ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أنبأ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى، أنبأ خَالِدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ أَبِي سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ مَوْلَى أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ، وَكَانَ خَالَ وَلَدِ عَطَاءٍ قَالَ: أَرْسَلَتْنِي أَسْمَاءُ إِلَى عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ فَقَالَتْ: بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكَ تُحَرِّمُ ثَلَاثَةَ أَشْيَاءٍ الْعَلَمَ فِي الثَّوْبِ، وَمِيثَرَةَ الْأُرْجُوَانِ، وَصَوْمَ رَجَبٍ كُلِّهِ، فَقَالَ لِي عَبْدُ اللهِ: أَمَّا مَا ذَكَرْتَ مِنْ رَجَبٍ، فَكَيْفَ بِمَنْ يَصُومُ الْأَبَدَ، وَأَمَّا مَا ذَكَرْتَ مِنَ الْعَلَمِ فِي الثَّوْبِ، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: " إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ الْحَرِيرَ مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ " فَخِفْتُ أَنْ يَكُونَ الْعَلَمُ مِنْهُ، وَأَمَّا مِيثَرَةُ الْأُرْجُوَانِ فَهَذِهِ مِيثَرَةُ عَبْدِ اللهِ فَإِذَا هِيَ أُرْجُوَانٌ، فَرَجَعْتُ إِلَى أَسْمَاءَ فَخَبَّرْتُهَا، فَقَالَتْ: هَذِهِ جُبَّةُ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَأَخْرَجَتْ إِلَيَّ جُبَّةً طَيَالِسَةً لَهَا لَبِنَةُ دِيبَاجٍ وَفَرْجَيْهَا مَكْفُوفَيْنِ بِالدِّيبَاجِ، فَقَالَتْ: هَذِهِ كَانَتْ عِنْدَ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا حَتَّى قُبِضَتْ، فَلَمَّا قُبِضَتْ قَبَضْتُهَا، وَكَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَلْبَسُهَا فَنَحْنُ نَغْسِلُهَا لِلْمَرْضَى نَسْتَشْفِي بِهَا " رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ يَحْيَى.
Abdullah, the freed slave of Sayyidah Asma' bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her), said: Sayyidah Asma' sent me to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said: "I have learned that you declare three things unlawful: 1. a striped (bordered) garment, 2. the red saddle cushion, 3. fasting the whole month of Rajab." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said to me: As for what you mentioned about Rajab, then what of one who fasts perpetually? As for the border on a garment, I heard Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) say that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Silk is worn only by those who have no share in the Hereafter." So I feared that the border might be part of it. As for the red saddle cushion, this is Abdullah's cushion, and it is red. I went back to Sayyidah Asma' (may Allah be pleased with her) and informed her, and she said: This is the cloak (jubbah) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). She brought out before me a Tayalisi cloak whose collar was of silk brocade and whose two slits were hemmed with brocade. (She said:) This was with Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and when she passed away, I took it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to wear it, and we would wash this cloak for the sick and seek healing through it.
أنبأ أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الرُّوذْبَارِيُّ، أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ دَاسَةَ، ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، ثنا ابْنُ نُفَيْلٍ، ثنا زُهَيْرٌ، ثنا خُصَيْفٌ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: " إِنَّمَا نَهَى رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الثَّوْبِ الْمُصْمَتِ مِنَ الْحَرِيرِ، فَأَمَّا الْعَلَمُ مِنَ الْحَرِيرِ وَسِدَاءُ الثَّوْبِ فَلَا بَأْسَ بِهِ " وَسَائِرُ الْأَخْبَارِ الَّتِي وَرَدَتْ فِي هَذَا الْبَابِ أَوْ فِي كَرَاهِيَتِهِ مَنْقُولَةٌ فِي آخِرِ كِتَابِ صَلَاةِ الْخَوْفِ حَيْثُ ذَكَرَهَا الشَّافِعِيُّ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) "forbade wearing pure silk, but there is no harm in a garment that has silk stripes and whose warp is of silk."
