It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The key to the prayer is purification, what makes (worldly acts) forbidden in it is the takbir, and what makes them permissible again is the taslim (salam)."

Abbad bin Tamim narrates from his paternal uncle Abdullah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man complained to him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he felt some doubt in his prayer: what should he do? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He should not break off his prayer until he hears a sound or notices a smell."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you is in doubt during his prayer whether something has come out of his private part, he should not break off his prayer until he hears a sound or notices a smell."

(a) Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you, during the prayer, feels a movement in his backside and is not certain whether his ablution has been broken, he should not break off his prayer until he hears a sound or notices a smell."
(b) This hadith provides evidence that when he hears a sound or notices a smell, he should break off the prayer. In this there is no difference between its happening deliberately, by forgetfulness, or involuntarily. And Allah knows best.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Satan comes to one of you and blows near his backside, so none of you should break off the prayer until he hears a sound or notices a smell, or does that deliberately himself."

(a) Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When someone's ablution is broken during the prayer, he should place his hand on his nose and leave."
(b) Hajjaj bin Muhammad and others followed him in narrating it from Hisham as connected (mawsul), whereas al-Thawri, Shu'bah, Za'idah, Ibn al-Mubarak, Shu'ayb bin Ishaq and Abdah bin Sulayman narrated it from Hisham bin Urwah, from his father, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as mursal. Abu Isa al-Tirmidhi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This (mursal version) is more sound than the hadith of al-Fadl bin Musa.

(a) A similar narration is reported through another chain.
(b) We have already mentioned in the Book of Purification the narration of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The prayer of any of you is not accepted without ablution."

Hadith Takhrij«صحيح۔ (حواله مذكوره) تقدم في الذي قبله۔ ابوداود 60»
(a) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Prayer is not accepted without purification, and charity is not accepted from stolen wealth."
(b) These hadiths establish that once a ritual impurity (hadath) occurs, it is obligatory to break off the prayer, and also to perform ablution. Since the prayer begins with the takbir, he should start the prayer afresh by saying the takbir anew.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Talq (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When someone passes wind during the prayer, he should go, perform ablution and repeat his prayer."
This hadith is explicit about repeating the prayer, and among the Companions this was also the view of Sayyiduna al-Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him).
