It is reported from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) about the reciters and their tragic martyrdom; the narrator said: Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), whenever he offered the morning prayer, raising his hands and supplicating against them (the disbelieving tribes), meaning those who had martyred the reciter Companions (may Allah be pleased with them).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, is modest and generous. When a servant spreads his hands before Him, He feels shy to turn them back empty."
Ja'far bin Maymun narrated this hadith in this way as marfu' (attributed to the Prophet), and Sulayman al-Taymi, in one of the two narrations from him, narrated it from Abu Uthman as mawquf (stopping at the Companion). This hadith is about supplication in general. A large number of the Companions raised their hands in the qunut, and in addition to that we have the hadith of Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him).

Abu Uthman al-Nahdi said: We used to come to pray while Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was leading the people in prayer; then he would recite the qunut after the bowing, raising his hands so high that his palms became visible, and he would keep his arms spread out.

Hadith Takhrij«حسن لغيره۔ اخرجه البخاري في رفع اليدين 94»
Abu Uthman said: I prayed the morning prayer behind Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). He recited eighty verses of Surah al-Baqarah, recited the qunut after the bowing and raised his hands, until I saw the whiteness of his (may Allah be pleased with him) armpits. He was supplicating in a loud voice, so much so that a man on the other side of the wall could hear it.

Abu Rafi' said: I prayed behind Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), and he recited the qunut after the bowing, raised his hands and supplicated in a loud voice.
Qatadah said that al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) also used to do the same.
This is authentic from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). The same is also reported from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), but that chain is weak; and it is also reported from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud and Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding the qunut of witr.
Imam al-Bayhaqi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: As for the matter of wiping the face with the hands upon finishing the supplication, I do not know it from any of the Salaf in the supplication of the qunut, although it is narrated from some of them in supplication outside the prayer. A weak hadith is also reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on this, and it is the practice of some people outside the prayer. As for wiping the face with the hands inside the prayer, this practice is not established by any authentic hadith, nor by any established report (athar), nor by analogy; so it is better not to do it and to suffice with what the Salaf did, that is, only raising the hands in supplication. 'Wa billahi al-tawfiq' (And success is only from Allah).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ask Allah Almighty with your hands spread out with the palms up, and do not ask with the backs of the hands upwards. When you have finished supplicating, wipe your faces with your hands."
Imam Abu Dawud (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This hadith is reported from Muhammad bin Ka'b al-Qurazi through various routes, and all of them are weak. This chain is the best of them, but it too is weak.

Ali al-Bashani (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Abdullah bin al-Mubarak (may Allah have mercy on him) about a person who wipes his face with his hands when supplicating. He said: "I have not found any proof for it." Ali said: I did not see him doing that. He (may Allah have mercy on him) himself used to recite the qunut in the witr after the bowing, and he also used to raise his hands.
