Sayyiduna al-Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me some words which I say in the qunut. Those words are: 'Allahumma-hdini fiman hadayt, wa 'afini fiman 'afayt, wa tawallani fiman tawallayt, wa barik li fima a'tayt, wa qini sharra ma qadayt, fa innaka taqdi wa la yuqda 'alayk, wa innahu la yadhillu man walayt, wa la ya'izzu man 'adayt, tabarakta Rabbana wa ta'alayt' "O Allah, guide me and include me among those whom You have blessed with right guidance; grant me well-being and include me among those whom You have granted well-being; include me among those whom You have taken as Your friends and make me Your friend; bless me in what You have given me; protect me and save me from the evil and harm You have decreed. Indeed, it is You who issues the decree, and no decree can be issued against You. Whoever You befriend can never be humiliated, and whoever You take as an enemy can never attain honour. Blessed are You, our Lord, and Exalted."

Abu al-Hawra' (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Sayyiduna al-Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "What did you learn from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He said: "He taught me supplications which I recite: 'Allahumma-hdini fiman hadayt, wa 'afini fiman 'afayt, wa tawallani fiman tawallayt, wa barik li fima a'tayt, wa qini sharra ma qadayt, fa innaka taqdi wa la yuqda 'alayk' "O Allah, bless me with guidance and include me among the rightly guided; grant me well-being and include me among those whom You have granted well-being; include me among those whom You have taken as Your friends; bless me in what You have given me; and protect me and save me from the evil You have decreed. Indeed, it is You who decrees, and no decree can be made against You."
I think he also said: "Whoever You make his protector can never be humiliated. O our Lord, Blessed are You and Exalted." The narrator said: I mentioned this to Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him), and he said: "This is the very supplication my father (may Allah be pleased with him) used to recite in the qunut in the Fajr prayer."

Burayd bin Abi Maryam (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I heard Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Muhammad bin Ali ibn al-Hanafiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) saying that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite these words in the morning prayer and in the witr of the night: 'Allahumma-hdini fiman hadayt, wa 'afini fiman 'afayt, wa tawallani fiman tawallayt, wa barik li fima a'tayt, wa qini sharra ma qadayt, fa innaka taqdi wa la yuqda 'alayk, wa innahu la yadhillu man walayt, tabarakta Rabbana wa ta'alayt' "O Allah, guide me and include me among those whom You have blessed with guidance; grant me well-being and include me among those whom You have granted well-being; include me among those whom You have taken as Your friends and make me Your friend; bless me in whatever You have given me; and keep me safe and secure from the evil You have decreed. Indeed, it is You who decrees, and no decree can be made against You, and whoever You befriend can never be humiliated. O our Lord, Blessed are You and Exalted."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to teach us a supplication which we used to recite in the Fajr prayer: 'Allahumma-hdina fiman hadayt, wa 'afina fiman 'afayt, wa tawallana fiman tawallayt, wa barik lana fima a'tayt, wa qina sharra ma qadayt, fa innaka taqdi wa la yuqda 'alayk, wa innahu la yadhillu man walayt, tabarakta Rabbana wa ta'alayt' "O Allah, guide us and include us among those whom You have blessed with right guidance; grant us well-being and include us among those whom You have granted well-being; include us among those whom You have taken as Your friends and make us Your friends; bless us in what You have given us; and protect us and save us from the evil and harm You have decreed. Indeed, it is You who decrees, and no decree can be made against You, and whoever You befriend can never be humiliated. O our Lord, Blessed are You and Exalted."
(b) In the narration of Mukhallad bin Yazid, which is mursal (with a broken chain), it is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught one of his grandsons, Sayyiduna al-Hasan and al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both), the supplication of the qunut of witr.
Burayd said: I heard both Ibn al-Hanafiyyah and Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) saying that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite this supplication in the qunut of the night.
(c) Likewise Abu Safwan al-Umawi narrated this narration from Ibn Jurayj, and in the hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Ibn al-Hanafiyyah it is that he used to recite it "in the qunut of the morning prayer."
(d) It is established that the supplication he (peace and blessings be upon him) taught is for both the qunut of the morning prayer and the qunut of witr, and that Burayd took this hadith through both chains. And success is only from Allah.

Khalid bin Abi Imran (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was supplicating against the disbelievers of Mudar. Suddenly Jibril (peace be upon him) descended. He gestured to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "Be silent!" So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fell silent. Then he said: "O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), Allah Almighty did not send you as one who reviles or curses; rather He sent you as a mercy, not as a punishment. 'Not for you is anything of the matter, whether He accepts their repentance or punishes them, for they are wrongdoers.' [Surah Al Imran: 128] Nothing of the matter is in your hands; if Allah wills He may accept their repentance or punish them, for they are wrongdoers." Then Jibril (peace be upon him) taught the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) this qunut: 'Allahumma inna nasta'inuka wa nastaghfiruka wa nu'minu bika wa nakhda'u laka wa nakhla'u wa natruku man yakfuruk; Allahumma iyyaka na'budu wa laka nusalli wa nasjudu wa ilayka nas'a wa nahfid; narju rahmataka wa nakhsha 'adhabak; inna 'adhabaka bil-kafirina mulhiq' "O Allah, we seek Your help, we ask Your forgiveness and we believe in You. To You alone we humble and submit ourselves, and we cut off every tie with whoever denies You and abandon him. O Allah, You alone we worship, for You alone we pray and to You alone we prostrate; towards You alone we hasten, and we are ready for Your every command. We hope for Your mercy and we fear Your severe punishment. Indeed, Your punishment is to overtake the disbelievers."
This is mursal (with a broken chain), and it has been narrated from Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) authentically with a connected chain.

(a) It is narrated from Ubayd bin Umayr (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) recited the qunut after the bowing: 'Allahumma-ghfir lana wa lil-mu'minina wal-mu'minat' "O Allah, forgive us all, the believing and Muslim men and women; put affection into their hearts, set things right between them, and help them against their enemies. O Allah, curse those disbelievers among the People of the Book who bar others from Your path, who deny Your messengers and who fight Your friends. O Allah, cast discord among them, make their feet tremble, and send down upon them a punishment which You do not turn away from the criminal people." 'Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim' "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. O Allah, from You alone we seek help, from You alone we ask forgiveness, You alone we praise, we do not disbelieve in You, and we separate ourselves from and abandon whoever disobeys You." 'Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim' "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. O Allah, You alone we worship, for You we pray and prostrate, towards You alone we hasten and strive, we fear Your severe punishment and we hope for Your mercy. Indeed, Your punishment is to overtake the disbelievers."

Sa'id bin Abd al-Rahman bin Abza narrates from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I prayed the morning prayer behind Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), and I heard him reciting after the recitation and before the bowing: 'Allahumma iyyaka na'budu wa laka nusalli wa nasjudu wa ilayka nas'a wa nahfid, narju rahmataka wa nakhsha 'adhabak, inna 'adhabaka bil-kafirina mulhiq; Allahumma inna nasta'inuka wa nastaghfiruka wa nuthni 'alayka al-khayr, wa la nakfuruk, wa nu'minu bika wa nakhda'u laka wa nakhla'u man yakfuruk' "O Allah, You alone we worship, for You alone we pray and prostrate, and towards You alone we hasten and strive. We hope for Your mercy and we fear Your punishment. Indeed, Your punishment is to overtake the disbelievers. O Allah, from You alone we seek help and from You alone we ask forgiveness; we praise You with good, we do not disbelieve in You, we believe in You, we submit to You, and we disown whoever disbelieves in You." That is how he said it: before the bowing.
Even though its chain is sahih (authentic), those who narrated from Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that his qunut was after the bowing are more numerous: Abu Rafi', Ubayd bin Umayr, Abu Uthman al-Nahdi and Zayd bin Wahb narrated it, and a number of narrators is more likely to have preserved it accurately than a single one. The excellent way Ubayd bin Umayr presented the hadith indicates his accurate memory and the accurate memory of those who preserved it from him. And it was narrated to us from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he recited the qunut in the Fajr prayer and made this supplication: 'Allahumma inna nasta'inuka wa nastaghfiruk' "O Allah, from You alone we seek help and from You alone we ask forgiveness."
And it was narrated to us from Abu Amr bin al-Ala' that he used to recite in the supplication of the qunut: 'Inna 'adhabaka bil-kuffari mulhiq' "Indeed, Your punishment is to overtake the disbelievers", meaning with a kasrah on the letter ha (mulhiq).
