Abu Qilabah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Malik bin al-Huwayrith (may Allah be pleased with him) would come to us and say: "Shall I not tell you about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" Then he would pray to show us, at a time other than a prayer time. When he raised his head from the second prostration in the first rak'ah, he would sit up straight and then rise, supporting himself on the ground.

(a) It is narrated from al-Azraq bin Qays: I saw Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): when he stood up from two rak'ahs, he would rise supporting himself on the ground with his hands. I said to his sons and his companions: Perhaps he does this because of old age? They said: No, but this is something that may be done.
(b) We have already mentioned the narration of Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) that it is reported from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when he rose from the prostration, he would rise supporting himself on the ground; and al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) and many of the Successors (may Allah have mercy on them) used to do the same.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade "leaning on the hand in the prayer."

(a) The wording of Ibn Shabbawayh's hadith is that he (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade "supporting oneself on one's hands in the prayer."
(b) Ibn Rafi' said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade "supporting oneself on one's hand while praying."
(c) Ibn Abd al-Malik said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade "supporting oneself on one's hands when rising from the prostration in the prayer."
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 2808
(a) The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade a man, when sitting in the prayer, to lean on his left hand.
(b) In the narration of Abu Dawud: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade sitting in the prayer while leaning on one's hand.
(c) This is the clearest of the narrations, and the narration of those other than Ibn Abd al-Malik does not contradict it, even though this one is clearer than them. The narration of Ibn Abd al-Malik is a mistake (wahm). What indicates that the narration of Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal (may Allah have mercy on him) is what is meant by the hadith is that Hisham bin Yusuf narrated it from Ma'mar in the same way.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade leaning on one's left hand while sitting in the prayer, and said: "This is the prayer of the Jews."

It is narrated from Hisham bin Sa'd: I heard Nafi' say that Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) saw a man praying, slumped on his knees and leaning on his left hand, and he said: "Do not pray like this; it is those who are being punished who sit like this."
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 2811
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Sunnah in the obligatory prayer is that when one stands up after the first two rak'ahs, he should not support himself with his hands on the ground; however, if he is so aged that he cannot stand up straight without support, then it is permissible.
