It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to lead us in the Zuhr prayer when the sun had passed its zenith. The heat was so intense that if a piece of meat were placed on the scorching ground it would be cooked. He would make the first rak'ah of Zuhr long and remain standing as long as the footsteps of the people could be heard. He made the second rak'ah shorter than the first, the third shorter than the second, and the fourth shorter than the third. He would lead us in the Asr prayer for as long as it takes a traveller to walk two or three farsakhs. In Asr he made the first rak'ah long, the second lighter than the first, the third shorter than the second, and the fourth shorter than the third. He would pray Maghrib at the time when someone would say that the sun had set while others would say: It has not set yet. He made the first rak'ah of Maghrib long, the second shorter than the first, and the third shorter than the second, and he would perform the Isha prayer somewhat late.
