And there are two views on this: the first is a third of the night, and the second is half of the night. So whoever adopted the first view argued from the following.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Jibril (peace be upon him) led me in prayer twice at the House (of Allah)," and he mentioned the hadith. In it is: "He led me in the Isha prayer in the first third of the night," meaning the second time.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) that a questioner asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) a question, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him no answer; then he ordered Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), and he called the iqamah, and he mentioned the hadith. In it is: he ordered Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), and he called the iqamah for Isha when the redness had disappeared; then when the next day came, and he mentioned the hadith. In it is: he led the Isha prayer up to a third of the night, then he said: "Where is the one who asked about the times of the prayer? The time is between these two."

(a) Sulayman bin Buraydah reports from his father (Buraydah, may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him about the times of the prayer. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Attend the prayer with us." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), and he gave the adhan in the darkness before dawn, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) led the Subh (dawn) prayer. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the order for Zuhr when the sun had declined from the middle of the sky, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the order for Asr while the sun was high, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the order for Maghrib when the sun had set, then he gave the order for Isha when the redness had disappeared. Then on the next day he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the order, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed Subh when it was bright; then he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the order for Zuhr and delayed it until it was cooler; then he gave the order for Asr while the sun was white and clear, with no yellowness mixed in it; then he gave the order for Maghrib before the redness disappeared; then he gave the order for Isha when a third of the night had passed, or part of the night. Abu Rawh was in doubt. When morning came, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Where is the questioner? The time of the prayer is between what you have seen."
(b) It is narrated from Alqamah bin Marthad that he (peace and blessings be upon him) had the iqamah called for Isha when a third of the night had passed.

Al-Zuhri says that Urwah bin al-Zubayr informed me that Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the Isha prayer into the darkness, until Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) called out: "The prayer! The children and women have fallen asleep." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out and said: "No one among the people of the earth is waiting for it except you." In those days this prayer was prayed only in Madinah, and they used to pray Isha between the setting of the redness of the night and a third of the night.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he was asked: Did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) have a ring made? He said: Yes! One night he (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the Isha prayer until half of the night. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) had led the prayer, he turned his face towards us and said: "The people have prayed and gone to sleep, and you have remained in prayer ever since you have been waiting for the prayer." It is as if I am looking at the gleam of his ring.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that one night we waited for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) until it was nearly half of the night. He (peace and blessings be upon him) came and led the prayer. It is as if I am looking at the silver band and the gleam of his (peace and blessings be upon him) ring. In a narration of Abu Dawud it is: until half of the night had passed, and the rest has the same meaning.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 1755
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked: Did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) have a ring? He said: Yes. One night he (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed Isha until half of the night, or close to it, had passed; then he (peace and blessings be upon him) came and said: "The people have prayed and gone to sleep, and you have remained in prayer ever since you have been waiting for the prayer."
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: It is as if I am looking at the gleam of his (peace and blessings be upon him) silver ring; and he pointed with his left hand and described it.

Thabit (may Allah have mercy on him) reports that people asked Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) about the ring of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the rest of the hadith is the same, except that (in this one) he raised his left little finger.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the Isha prayer until close to half of the night, then he came out and he (peace and blessings be upon him) led the prayer and said: "You have remained in prayer as long as you were waiting for it; and were it not for my concern for the old age of the elderly and the weakness of the weak" (the narrator says: I think he (peace and blessings be upon him) also said) "and the need of the one who has work to do, I would certainly have delayed this prayer until half of the night."

(a) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to the Companions while they were waiting for Isha, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The people have prayed and gone to sleep while you are waiting for it; indeed, you have remained in prayer ever since you have been waiting for it. Were it not for my fear for the weakness of the weak and the old age of the elderly, I would have delayed this prayer until half of the night."
(b) Shu'bah (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I met him a second time and he said: or up to a third of the night. Khalid bin al-Harith (may Allah have mercy on him) reports from Shu'bah (may Allah have mercy on him): up to half of the night. It is narrated from Abu al-Minhal (may Allah have mercy on him): up to a third of the night.

(a) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The prayer has a first and a last time. The first time of Zuhr is when the sun declines, and its last time is when the time of Asr begins. The first time of Asr is when its time begins, and its last time is when the sun turns yellow. The first time of Maghrib is when the sun sets, and its last time is when the redness disappears. The first time of Isha is when the redness disappears, and its last time is when it is half of the night. The first time of Fajr is when the dawn breaks, and its last time is when the sun rises."
(b) It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The prayer has a first and a last time."
(c) The Shaykh says that Imam al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) recorded something of the same meaning.
Yahya bin Ma'in declared this hadith of Muhammad bin Fudayl, from al-A'mash, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah, weak, and said that it is only narrated from al-A'mash from Mujahid; all the narrators reported it from al-A'mash from Mujahid as mursal.

Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) says: See whether my narration agrees with what you have heard from the letter: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him): Pray Zuhr when the sun is high, meaning when it has declined; pray Asr while the sun is white and clear; pray Maghrib when the sun has set; and he said: Pray Isha up to half of the night; and pray Subh in the darkness, or in the blackness (before dawn), and lengthen the recitation.
