It is narrated from Shurayh bin Hani that he said: I came to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and asked about wiping over leather socks. She said: Go to Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), for he used to travel with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator said: I came to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him, and he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us "to wipe for three days when we are travelling, and for a day and a night when we are resident."

Al-Hasan bin Ali bin Affan narrated it in the same way. A large number of narrators reported this hadith from Abd al-Wahhab al-Thaqafi from al-Muhajir Abu Makhlad, while Zayd bin al-Hubab reported it from him (Abd al-Wahhab) from Khalid al-Hadhdha'. Either this is a mistake on his (Zayd's) part or on the part of al-Hasan bin Ali, or else Abd al-Wahhab narrated it in both ways. The narration of the large group is more likely to be the preserved one.

(a) Zirr bin Hubaysh (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I came to Safwan bin Assal al-Muradi (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: What has brought you? I said: I have come seeking knowledge. He said: "The angels lower their wings for the seeker of knowledge, out of pleasure with what he seeks." I said: Something has been troubling my heart about wiping over leather socks after relieving oneself and urinating, and you are one of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so I have come to ask you whether you have heard anything about it. He said: Yes! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to order us, "when we were on a journey, or he said: travellers, not to take off our leather socks for three days and three nights, except that we take them off for major ritual impurity (janabah), and not to take them off for relieving oneself or for sleep."
(b) In the narration of Asim (may Allah have mercy on him) there is the additional wording about the period of wiping for the resident. Imam al-Tirmidhi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Muhammad bin Isma'il al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him): In your view, which narration about fixing the period for wiping over leather socks is most authentic? He said: The hadith of Safwan bin Assal (may Allah be pleased with him). The hadith of Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) is hasan (good). The Shaykh said: The narration of Shurayh bin Hani (may Allah have mercy on him) from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) on this topic is the most authentic according to Imam Muslim (may Allah have mercy on him).
