It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that we set out on a journey, and a stone struck one of our men and wounded him in the head. Then he had a wet dream. He asked his companions: Do you find any concession for me to perform tayammum? They said: We do not find any concession for you, because you are able (to use) water. He took a ritual bath and died. When we came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him (peace and blessings be upon him) of this (incident), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They have killed him; may Allah kill them. Why did they not ask when they did not know? The cure for ignorance is only to ask. It would have sufficed him to perform tayammum and bind a bandage on his wound, wrapping a cloth on his wound, then wipe over it and wash the rest of his body."

Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: When there is no bandage on the wound, he should wash around it but not wash the wound itself.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الطهارة / 1078
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Whoever has a wound with a bandage tied over it should perform ablution, wipe over the bandages, and wash the area around the bandages.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the big toe of his foot was wounded, so he wrapped something over it, and he used to wipe over it.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he performed ablution while his hand was bandaged, so he wiped over the bandages and washed the remaining limbs. This narration from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) is sahih (authentic). (b) Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A hadith has been narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that one of his forearm bones was broken, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to "wipe over the splints". The Imam (may Allah have mercy on him) said: If I knew its chain to be sahih, I would give a ruling according to it.

Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: One of my forearm bones broke, so I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Wipe over the splints." (b) Amr bin Khalid al-Wasiti was known for fabricating hadith; Imam Ahmad, Yahya bin Ma'in and other imams of hadith called him a liar. Waki' bin al-Jarrah (may Allah have mercy on him) attributed the fabrication of hadith to him. (c) Umar bin Musa bin Wajih corroborated him in this, narrating something similar from Zayd bin Ali (may Allah have mercy on him). (d) Umar bin Musa is matruk (abandoned) and is accused of fabricating hadith. We seek refuge in Allah from being forsaken. (e) It has been narrated from Zayd bin Ali (may Allah have mercy on him) through another, unknown chain, which is worth nothing. (f) Abu al-Walid Khalid bin Yazid al-Makki narrated it through another chain from Zayd bin Ali, from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), as mursal; and Abu al-Walid is da'if (weak). (g) Nothing on this subject is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). (h) The most authentic narration on this subject is the hadith of Ata bin Abi Rabah (may Allah have mercy on him) that has already passed, and it too is not strong. Rather, on this subject there are only the sayings of the jurists among the Tabi'un and those after them, along with what we have narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) about wiping over the bandage. And Allah knows best.

It is narrated from Yusuf al-Makki (may Allah have mercy on him) that a companion of ours had a wet dream while he was wounded and had bandaged his chest. We asked Ubayd bin Umayr (may Allah have mercy on him), and he said: He should take a ritual bath and wipe over the cloth, or he said: wipe over his chest.

Sulayman al-Taymi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Tawus (may Allah have mercy on him) about a wounded man who intends to perform ablution or take a ritual bath for janabah while he has tied a bandage (over the wound). He said: If he fears (that harm will befall him), let him wipe over the cloth, and if he does not fear, let him wash it.

Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I heard Ata bin Abi Rabah, Mujahid bin Jabr and Tawus (may Allah have mercy on them) saying about a man whose finger had been wounded: He should wash off the blood that has got on it, then bandage it, then wipe over the bandage when he performs ablution; and if the blood seeps through until it appears, he should replace it with another bandage, then wipe over it when he performs ablution.

(a) Hisham bin Hassan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A man came to al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) and asked him while I was listening. He said: His thigh or his shin was broken and he became junub (what should he do?). He ordered him to wipe over the splints.
(b) Imran bin Hudayr (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I had a severe sore from the plague and I became junub, so I asked Abu Mijlaz (may Allah have mercy on him), and he said: Wipe, for that is sufficient for you.

Ash'ath (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Ibrahim al-Nakha'i (may Allah have mercy on him): My hand is broken, and over it there is its cloth, its sticks and its splints, and sometimes I become junub? He said: Wipe over it with water, for Allah Almighty accepts a valid excuse.

It is narrated from Qatadah (may Allah have mercy on him) that bandages and splints are not to be placed on a wound or a fracture, if it is in a place of ablution, until he has performed his ablution for prayer and washed the place of that wound because of the blood that has appeared from it.
