أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أنبأ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ يُوسُفَ، حدَّثَنِي أَبِي، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، ح وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أنبأ أَبُو الْفَضْلِ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، قَالَا: ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، ثنا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، قَالَ: قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ شَقِيقٍ: كَانَ عُثْمَانُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ يَنْهَى عَنِ الْمُتْعَةِ وَكَانَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ يَأْمُرُ بِهَا فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ لِعَلِيٍّ كَلِمَةً ثُمَّ قَالَ عَلِيٌّ: لَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ أَنَّا قَدْ تَمَتَّعْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: أَجَلْ وَلَكِنَّا كُنَّا خَائِفِينَ رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى، وَمُحَمَّدِ بْنِ بَشَّارٍ.
Abdullah bin Shaqiq (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) used to forbid tamattu' and Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to order it. Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said something to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You know that we performed tamattu' with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: Yes! But we were afraid.
